Most people don't fly other nation's flags though. But good point.

Apparently you haven't been to Texas for a while (if ever). We have numerous patriotic people who insist on flying the Mexican flag. Guess their derivation and immigration statis.

But the preamble is just a piece of paper and so is the Bible?
What are you thinking, do you know what the flag stands for?

I think you just proved his point.

I am appalled at how the flag is displayed. I am a veteran if the Vietnam era, my dad the Korean War and my grandfather WWII.
I have been known to play the flag police. Today I went to 3 businesses. One was flying one of those huge flags that they could hide a pickup under. The flag was flying almost two ft from the tip of the pole. When I asked the owner, he said it is too heavy. I said that they have assist devices. The other 2 business had large flags, both with multiple rips and holes. Both took them down and gave them too me. I took them to the Boy Scouts local office to be taken to a ceremony of flags to be properly desposed of.

I couldn't agree more. It should always be displayed with pride and properly. I was sick when our president flew the LBGTQ flag from the capital. No other flag but old glory should grace that building.

I have a 3' x 5' embroidered stars & stripes flag made of nylon flown well off the ground by itself in front of my house. It comes indoors only during high winds and severe weather conditions. It is well lit at night. Of the many flags on my in-town street, it's the only one lit at night. I retire my worn flags to the local girl scouts who take care of their disposal properly. I hope I am doing right by it, I have made more than a half-hearted attempt to do it right. Like others here, I am saddened and disturbed by the lack of flag etiquette I see all around me.

And yet you have no special respect for the flag, or am I misunderstanding you?

I have no *special* respect. Not the *special* respect as shown by a large number of self-declared "patriots".

The flag is a personal expression. Nothing more. And personal is individual. The "thinking" is done by those who do choose to think.

Side Note. Why is it necessary to play the Anthem at sporting events? Which side represents the US? In the Olympic games, which are international venues, it makes sense to play the various anthems, to honor the participating national teams.

For those that are interested, the flag code can be found here: https://www.legion.org/flag/code Interestingly, many of the displays that you see of the flag in today's America are in fact violations of the code.

I really wonder if you are so proud of your country why do you leave your country?

I now am able to fly my US and POW flags even when it is very windy. I switched to fiberglass poles that handle 40 mph winds easily.

I cannot agree. The flag is not personal expression, it’s a national expression/symbol. In this badly polarized/politicized nation of ours, a little national unity would be a positive change. Personally, I am comforted by the playing of the national anthem at sporting events. Patriotism and tradition may seem corny or irrelevant to you, but I have a different opinion, so we can agree to disagree in a respectful manner. That freedom is guaranteed to you by the document you referenced and defended by those who typically (but apparently not always) respect the symbol of their country.

Peace.

When I hear the National Anthem played it makes me happy and comforted. It can be a personal choice not to like it but, to suggest it not be played is selfish and offensive.

A forked tongue still goes opposite ways.

And you insist that your interpretation is correct because? Your own statements betray you. You put your symbology above the principles.

For the record, your opinion is just your opinion. It is no better that anyone else's opinion.

IF you read my response, I have not denigrated your opinion or stated anywhere that mine was the correct one - only that it is shared by by many other veterans, which is true. I’ve treated you respectfully and said that we can agree to disagree. What more do you want?

I don’t understand your forked tongue metaphor. You seem angry and somewhat virulent in your attitude about the flag. You mentioned you are a veteran - did you have some bad experience with the military that is fueling this anger?
