The International will probably not be covered by Nikon USA warranty and/or repair.

Right! And you want the USA model because it will be covered by Nikon USA for warranty work, repair, and updates.

You pay more for insurance.

Can you purchase directly from Nikon, themselves, leaving no question?

I have been purchasing from B&H, but apparently now they’ve had some ‘international versions’; apparently I do have the option of purchasing directly from Pentax, which I may have to do.

I got curious about the price difference for an imported/grey market Canon R5 on Abe's of Maine website, it's selling for $2729.00 and the R5 American warranty version is around $3399.00, that's a savings of $670.00. Mine has the US warranty.

There's the USA version, then there's the grey market version and finally, there's the Abe's of Maine version. I wish all who are considering the purchase of what I am sure is a marvelous camera the very best in reaching a decision.

Purchasing from Nikon USA is definitely safe. Buying gray market is less expensive, though. I'd rather have Nikon backing up the camera. B&H will make it clear which version you are buying. If in doubt, ask them. A low price should make you suspicious.

I understand the U.S. version and warranty. I never understood why Nikon would not fix a problem if you were willing to pay repairs. It is their camera.

It's not just the repairs to the equipment. All Nikon-USA dealers pay a certain amount to Nikon-USA to be part of the national distribution and repair services. Nikon-USA helps defray advertising costs for Nikon products, and they supply sales materials, etc. to the dealers. Gray market camera dealers do not pay into the Nikon-USA support. Ergo, no support, not even after the warranties expire. Spare parts go only to Nikon-USA accredited repair facilities.

FWIW, the camera companies are no different than other electronics companies. The retail network is very exclusive.

Nikon stopped having third party accredited repair facilities several years ago, one reference said early 2020.

Thus, for new equipment, the only official choice is Nikon.

Does this apply to buying Tamron lenses also. I see Z mount 35-150 for 1999 but some offer it for 1600. I wonder if Tamron honors Grey market for repair

Many years ago a friend of mine was in Hong Kong and I had him buy me 2 Nikon F4's because they were so much cheaper.

I did not realize what a gray market camera was until I went to get it repaired at Nikon. You would think that if it bared the Nikon name they would work on it. I mean how different can it be?

The Z8 is a Nikon and gray market is different than used. Nikon will repair used Z8 with a fee but not repair gray market Z8 whether you pay them or not.

True, but unless you somehow check serial numbers -- when you buy used, you have no idea whether it was US Market or Grey Market -- I don't think the usual suspects (i.e., keh, mpb, B&H, etc.) check for this when they resell a used product, and the sellers on Ebay certainly don't.

This is a very sticking point. Even if you know the serial number you don't know for sure if it's gray or not. If you call Nikon they said to send it in, they don't tell you if it's gray or USA just by the serial number.
