Typically once a year (New Years) when I change my Copyrite info, I take all of my batteries & chk them through the camera to view the "life" status left in the battery. Once it starts to show a percentage less than 100, I offload the battery to my local landfill which accepts lithium batteries. I'm really not worried about price delta of genuine Nikon vs 3rd party batteries considering what I have shelled out for a new camera/lens & also I always carry back up & make sure my batteries are 100 % charged before I go anywhere.

Jerry, the fact you are buying twice as many batteries speaks to the question. Your honor, the defense rest. (Sorry Jerry, this is in humor)

It took me a while to stop laughing so I could reply.

I like having spare batteries. Having four is better than having two. My generic battery use goes back further than I can remember, and I've never had a problem. Maybe if I did a controlled test, I would find that Nikon gave me 2,000 shots, and Mr. Generic gave me 1,500, but does that matter? Not to me.

If you run tests they would be very complicated tests. I expect some of the third party batteries would even out perform the OEM but many would be not as good as OEM. Some even could cause problems with the camera. Also one particular sample of the batteries may be better than others of the exact same brand.
I am not saying that third party batteries are any worse than OEM but I would stick to the OEM because I don't see the price difference is that much.
My camera will be 10 years old in December and I am still using the one battery that came with it. I never run out of battery power while shooting. So it's easy for me to buy another OEM battery if this one goes dead.

I still worry about Li Ion batteries from random manufacturers and fire hazard so I would stick to OEM batteries. Yes I know there are reputable 3rd party manufacturers but how do I know for sure? Not eBay or Amazon for sure.

Here's something I found about aftermarket brands. As for accuracy, who knows.

And here's where batteries are actually made.

Companies like Canon and Nikon never made any batteries. All of their batteries are made by some other manufacturers for them. So in theory these manufacturers being in the business of battery making they could make better batteries than those they made for Canon or Nikon. But really rarely(if there is one) is a third party battery is better than the OEM and they are always less expensive.

Outside of the one Nikon EN-EL 15 that came with the camera I only used 3rd battery batteries (both EN-EL 15 and 18) with my D850 and battery grip and never had any issues.

When switching to a Z9 I found that none of my aftermarket EN-EL 18s worked. At that point I decided to "go legit" and have only purchased original Nikon batteries since. Fortunately, I don't really need a ton of batteries, therefore the additional cost of original batteries isn't too bad.

My local photo store, Unique, sold me a replacement battery for my Nikon D3400, not Nikon but a major brand. When I tried to use it, the camera said, no battery recognized.

Now before anyone says "DO a Google search", I have tried that with little success, and here on the Hog, it seems the last post addressing the problem was from ~ 2017.
I have a "famous name" manual for my D 7500, which states that the author could not get any 3rd party battery to work in the D 7500.(?)
I replaced my alleged "factory" battery with a 3rd party unit...one of a pair my wife gave me a couple of Christmases ago, "just to see". So far, so good...it hasn't let out any of the Magic Smoke that makes our cameras work so well.
I have more than a half-dozen batteries, obtained from different sources, and for some reason, I have kept those for my D 7100 separate from the others. I am wondering if they all might not power both of my cameras with no problems? If I load a battery, and the "battery status" window reads 100% charged, and age as new, the battery should work just fine, right?
I have 3 EN-EL 15s,(no suffix) 2 Ravpowers, An EN-EL 15b, and a no-name CX-EN-EL15. I'm not sure if any one of them are "genuine" Nikons. They look good, but the differences between "genuine" and "fake" are so small, and manufacturers are surely smart enough to correct the flaws in the years since 2017. OR?
As needed, I plan to replace the batteries, hopefully with Nikon units, but other than from Nikon, which are co$tly, how can a person be sure of getting the genuine article from a local camera store or on line?

A Nikon factory rep sitting in a well-known retail store once told me that off-brand batteries will void the Nikon warranty.

That is close to my own experience. I have noticed that my Sony batteries hold their charge a bit longer than the after-markket ones so I'm sure to recharge them before a trip. However that advantage does not seem worth the much higher price-tag.
