The answer could also be neither, or both!
There's also Olympus, Fuji, Sony, Pentax/Ricoh, and others.
They support a variety of formats from micro 4/3 to medium format.
Any new models these days will be mirrorless, which is the way to go if you're starting from scratch.
For a starter, try a Nikon Z50 kit with 2 lenses and you'll be on your way - coming from a Nikon fanboy, but all of the mentioned brands have great offerings.

Dependence on Sony for anything spells doom (eventually), but I think once Nikon gets more in the black they will contract to other manufacturers (Toshiba? Those sensors in the D7xxx series are awesome!), or start up their own fab again, which is probably less likely in the next few years.

Went all in on mirrorless. For some reason my wife’s image doesn’t show on a mirror. Weird.

You are comparing what to what specifically? Nikon and Canon have produced countless cameras. They all have minor differences. I am lifelong Nikon user. I will never change due to my investment in lenses. However, you will hear the same argument from the other side. The lenses and quality thereof are the primary changes that should matter to you.

You need double mirrors plus a 1/4 wave plate. Acoarst, the being thus made visible may shock you !

Ok. Still don't like them. But I don't like them based on my own experience, not on anyone else's Kool Ade. I do think its interesting that they were the first DSLR models discontinued several years ago, and that there are no replacements or even rumored replacements for them to this day. So I absolutely do not feel alone in my assessment of their relative goodness or badness.
I also never look to Ken Rockwell for any validation of anything I might think. I'm pretty sure that you could look into one of his ears and see all the way through to the other side.

I've used one. It takes pictures. Color ones, even. Still don't like it. I'd rather dig out and use my old D300 or D300s.

I don’t think your likes are all that important if you are unable to give objective and useful advice. I don’t like cooked broccoli. Nobody should eat that crap.

I have done that several times, but will repeat here for you. Controls are too small and too close together. Too many important functions are accessible only via the menu, including ISO. Mirror instead of prism viewfinder. Only a single command dial (on the top/front) on many of the models, making manual exposure awkward and slow to accomplish. Batteries are too small. No grips available. No internal focus motor. Strap loops hard molded in the body (no swivel action). The list continues, but this should be enough to give you an idea.
