You own a Canon and like it. So, it is user friendly. The new mirrorless cameras are a technological wonder. You have to learn how to use all the features and then it is user friendly. I've been using the Canon EOS cameras since '87 and just, recently, switched to the Canon mirrorless. As long as the camera has a shutter and aperture control, it is user friendly.

There are three responses to a great image: yes, no, and Canon sure does make nice pictures.

THE PRO REALITY:
The Top Worldwide News Services have ditched their DLSRs, mostly Canon, and all have moved to mirrorless cameras and mirrorless lens systems for their staff photographers and staff videographers worldwide. .

Associated Press; all Gannett Media including USA Today; Canadian Press; UK's Top News Service have all moved exclusively to Sony mirrorless gear for ALL their staff photographers and staff videographers around the world after years of testing Sony gear around the world in the toughest conditions.

AFP (Agence France Presse) helped develop and test the Nikon Z9, and AFP uses the Z9 for their staffers worldwide.

None of these Top Worldwide News Services chose Canon mirrorless, NONE. . Just a fact.

Read why these Top Worldwide News Services went to Sony and Nikon mirrorless gear for their staffers worldwide:

https://alphauniverse.com/stories/why-the-associated-press-just-switched-to-sony/

https://petapixel.com/2021/11/17/sony-is-now-the-exclusive-camera-provider-for-gannett-and-usa-today/

https://www.dpreview.com/news/4545693607/the-uk-largest-news-agency-partners-with-sony

And Canon fanboys will talk about Canon's overall lead in total camera worldwide sales. But as Tony and Chelsea Northrup noted in their video on the state of each of the major camera companies in 2023, Canon's overall sales numbers are 50% from Canon's dominance of the DSLR market, where they have 75% of DSLR sales, impressive.

In mirrorless sales, Sony is #1 and still leads worldwide over Canon in mirrorless sales; and Sony also is #1 and leads in mirrorless sales over Canon mirrorless in their home country of Japan. Independent CIPA and BCN numbers confirm this. Sony doesn't make any DSLRs.

Whether you choose to shoot with the still-excellent DLSRs around, or you have decided to move to mirrorless for all the performance advantages of mirrorless that NO DSLR can physically ever have, use what you love, use what works for you, use what you already have paid for, and be happy and just keep taking photos .

Full disclosure, I have owned and used pro Nikon and Canon cameras and lenses (both brands, with some Leica too) for 40+ years , and then moved over to Sony Mirrorless back in January 2017. I loved my Nikon, Canon and Leica gear, and made many memorable and National and International Award Winning shots with my Nikon, Canon and Leica gear, covering all subjects around the world from breaking news, pro sports to war conflict and more.

As a Sony shooter I have continued to make award-winning shots covering subjects around the world. I have owned Sony A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, A7RIV, and currently own Sony A1, A7RV, A7SIII. I currently have 13 mirrorless-designed E-mount lenses covering 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox.

Cheers and best to you all, whatever gear you prefer to use.
The usual Canon Fanboys here in UHH will always ha... (show quote)

If you use long prime lenses, Nikon has more lighter weight/cheaper long lenses to chose from ie 300 f4, 500 f5,6, and 400 4.5. From what I read, Nikon's AF lags behind Sony and Canon.

Long telephotos?
How about 600mm and 800mm?

Which is better… mirror or mirror less… i’ve owned a canon and do like it… but have wondered if nikon is more user friendly?

If youre thinking about advancing to an EVF then you absolutely should go for it. Which brand does not matter in the least. Proof of that is the endless stoopid argument about it.

My sister is NOT a photographer although she sometimes needs photographs and needs to take matters into her own hands.

Shes had an EOS Rebel with just the 50mm for many years but she didnt expect to need it on a recent road trip. But she was mistaken. Her iPhone 14 was not up to the task at hand.

Soooooo .... she called me and asked if the EOS R6II was a good midrange choice. She estimated midrange simply by price.

There was really no reason to get into all the nonsense discussion youll see around here. She asked about a Canon, so why muddy the water with the equivalent Sonys or Nikons ? A camera is a camera. Midrange is midrange. If she had asked about a Sony or a Nikon then I would tell her "yes, buy that".

----------------------------------------

Acoarst I warned her to skip the cheapest kit lens and reminded her that she was very near the NH state line (half hour drive saves a few hundred $$ sales tax). She was still yakking on the phone with me as she landed at Hunts in Manchester and bought it. Its much more important WHERE you buy than WHAT you buy. (Hunts is as good as B&H but B&H was many hours away right then.)

Its really all that simple !! Buying a camera is not like negotiating World Peace, nor even like buying a car. Its just a camera. The "decision" can be made in under an hour, on the phone, at 80 MPH (in light traffic acoarst !)

I was a Canon shooter from 1981 to 2018. Then I wanted to switch to mirrorless. I tested cameras from all the major brands and went with a brand that, until then, I never considered a serious contender (Fujifilm X-T3) Every brand will have a learning curve but once you get past that, you will be use to it and it becomes user friendly. Consider "Ergonomics". Try them! Dont relay on what other people think.

Yes, ergonomics. I should adjust my remark that theyre all alike. Some bodies have the eyepiece over on the left corner and that is something one might love or hate.

Otherwise, they are all alike (at any given level in the price spectrum).

The marketing departments do a sort of flip flop. Outwardly, they each claim to be selling their oh-so-verrry important differences. But internally they all strive to be as much the same as possible, cuz the real risk of being different is the risk of ending up with a much smaller slice of the pie (Coke, Pepsi, Moxie).

--------------------------------------------

If anyone really wants a platypus of a camera (without going mega $$ exotic) I would, as a user, recommend a Lumix GH6. Its been out for a year now but theres no David Busch or Darrell Young book for it. It has a toadall lack of mainstream appeal even though outwardly it seems like just another contender.

One thing you may want to consider is your peer group. Do you often shoot with other people who prefer a manufacturer? Do you enjoy periodicals or merchants that tend to favor a particular brand? I shoot Nikon mirrorless (z8), but likely would be just as happy choosing a Cannon, Sony, etc., when I moved to mirrorless.

In my opinion the best camera is the one that feels the best in your hand and makes what you consider good/great photos. Everything else is simply the endless question of which is better a Ford or a Chevrolet. Technology is simply a means to obtained the image you want, Great technology in the hands of bad photographer, will yield bad photos.

Gordon Parks took timeless photos with what today is ancient equipment.

Now that we have finished this week's installments of raw vs. JPEG and Canon vs. Nikon (hey what about Sony??), isn't it about time to revisit auto vs. manual, FF vs. cropped, prime vs. zoom...
