Abe's of Maine is actually located in Linden, NJ and they may also have a store in Brooklyn. Go to the review sites to look a complaints and issues. Grey market is a concern and so is their pricing on accessories (filters, batteries, etc.).

I would recommend using reputable and tested online merchants. KEH, Cametta, B & H, Adorama and if only Canon, Profeel. I'm sure there are others.

I can understand your desire to deal with a camera store outside of New York, just to avoid the sales tax. Try Abe's of Maine, KEH, and some others. Good luck.

I tried Abe's of Maine. Had some problems. They did resolve them but I decided not to use them again.

Does anyone have experience dealing with/buying from "Tri State camera" (in Brooklyn, NY., I think)? Particularly on buying new higher dollar items, such as Nikon lenses. I don't know much about them, so if you could give me the benefit of your thoughts on their reputation, would greatly appreciate it.

I had some dealings with them a number of years ago, trying to buy a Nikkormat. They advertised cheaper than B&H, etc. By the time I got through with them "adding" things that were standard with B&H, they were many dollars more expensive. Never again. Same for Abe's. They both make their margins on the so-called extras. I've read the tales of no batteries, no neck straps, needing body covers, etc.

B&H, Adorama, and even the local shops really outshine them.

BBB Rating for Abe's of Maine = B (mostly due to advertising and customer service) . Adorama BBB rating = A, Cameta = A+, B&H BBB rating = A+. Need anyone say more?

Used them many years ago to buy a Minolta film camera. It ended up being grey market version. Still have the camera today, and it actually still works, BUT, I would never use them again, they bold faced lied to me.

Why are you dragging up this thread from 2016? Now others will see it and think it is new and add more comments.

Whenever I see cheaper than normal prices and the address of the firm is Brooklyn, I know that I'm dealing with Hasidic gonifs.

In short, please refrain from stereotypes.

That is not necessarily correct. I have dealt with B&H for many years. A short while ago, I met a wonderful gentleman who gave me a personal tour of the inner workings of B&H. I promised him that I would not divulge his name or the statistics and information he revealed to me about their sales. I respect him for that.

While I am not Hasidic, Lubavitcher, Sephardic or Ashkenazi I would take offense to people who automatically assume that someone is a thief just by the way they dress. These are religious sects who have sterner restrictions than you or I. They as well as all of us MUST be respected. A thief or a “goniff” will appear in many forms. We should be leery and ask others (BBB) before we draw conclusions. You may find out someone that you didn’t expect will present themself to be of questionable character. I believe we should support and educate our fellow Hoggers.

FWIW,
I hope that this thread isn’t sent to the Attic.

If it were going to be sent to the Attic, it probably would have been sent there in 2016, when that post was made.

That is agreeable. I really don’t look forward to that. I stay away from the politics and news and stereotypes. That is all I’m writing.

I have never heard of them. And I live in Brooklyn. I go to B&H for everything. Including candies

Consider checking the calendar date (year = 2016) of the OP and scanning the 2-pages of existing discussion, when picking old threads to add a new reply ....

I wrote this way back in March 2023. I think you should take my advice. I’m taking my own advice. Especially about the candies!
