Does anyone have experience dealing with/buying from "Tri State camera" (in Brooklyn, NY., I think)? Particularly on buying new higher dollar items, such as Nikon lenses. I don't know much about them, so if you could give me the benefit of your thoughts on their reputation, would greatly appreciate it.

A quick Google search turns up a number of reviews that are much less than positive. Any shop selling for significantly less than Adorama, B&H, Cameta, or KEH should be avoided like the plague. They're probably selling gray market. If you need warranty service, it would have to be sent to the country of origin for service. That could take months.

The Better Business Bureau of New York gave them a grade of D-minus.

Why take a chance when you have B&H, Adorama and KEH. Why take a chance

Whenever I see cheaper than normal prices and the address of the firm is Brooklyn, I know that I'm dealing with Hasidic gonifs.

The big companies authorize stores to sell their products, and they control the pricing. If a store is selling below the prices of big-name stores, then you can be suspicious. Good stores will be selling at virtually the same prices, but they may include little extras to temp you to buy from them.

Just purchased a Nikon D5500 body and Nikon 35mm lens from Adorama about a week ago. They had the same price as the other top sellers recommended on UHH but offered bundles with both. Bag, filter, card etc. Not high end extras but extras to keep or give away. Also found Digital Goja on Amazon for my Tamron 16-300mm lens (authorized USA Tamron dealer) who also gave a bundle when you purchased this lens. Now have two different types of bags etc. Registered each item with mfg.
Stay with USA authorized dealers.

I was at the town dump - actually a recycling center - and I saw a brand new small camera bag, with the tags still attached and the long strap and papers inside. It was set off to the side where people leave "good stuff." I brought it home and use it for my camcorder stuff. I figure someone got it free with a purchase and didn't have a use for it.

Stay away from Tri-State. Besides the fact they have a poor rating, a lot of their equipment is grey market which they don't necessarily tell you. They also try to have you buy a "bundle" that is more expensive than going to any of the ABC stores (Adorama, B&H, Cameta)

Keep away from them. If you prefer reliable dealers go to Cameta, Hunt, B&H and Adorama just to mention a few of them.

I use B & H Photo, Profeel and Adorama for my online photography purchases. They all have competitive prices. Adorama & B & H are authorized Canon & Nikon dealers.

I can understand your desire to deal with a camera store outside of New York, just to avoid the sales tax. Try Abe's of Maine, KEH, and some others. Good luck.
