Who closes an eye while shooting? One wants to keep both eyes open, one for the viewfinder and one to watch for what is happening with the scene. Just use your dominant eye for the viewfinder. (Edit: accidentally attached to the wrong thread statement - sorry)

I do close my left eye when using the viewfinder but I said "close to the eye". It seems they did better at reading distance than having to put the eye to the viewfinder.

Exactly. I have an E-M1 and an E-PL7. I carry the E-PL7 in a coat pocket every day. The drill is - when it come out of the pocket I pull the screen out 90 degrees and shoot from the waist, eliminating any glare problem. I find the real problem with the lack of an EVF is you need to hold a stationary screen out in front of your face, just as with a smart phone camera. Also, holding the camera at your waist gives you three-point stability, just as when you hold a camera against your eye.

When holding it at the waist, do you press the shutter release with your right thumb?

My first mirrorless camera was the Sony A5000 model that I got as an introduction to the mirrorless world and back then (2015?), Sony was the only game in town. I only had it a year, the lack of a viewfinder rendered it impossible to use in daylight. After awhile, I stopped using it bright daylight. Sold it after a year or so and bought the Sony A6300 that was a vast improvement (EVF etc.).

Sony a5000 and a5100, for two. The a5100 is very similar to the a6000, which has an EVF.

I think the a5xxx series sales taught Sony a lesson... The a6300 is redemption!

I just posted on these two cameras, A500 and A6300. The latter was a great improvement and made shooting in bright sunlight feasible. My main complaint on the A6300 was the lack of a rear control dial, the back wheel would go into ISO settings instead of changing the shutter speed if pressed wrong.

That is why they are so absolutely stupid and a waste of time, effort and money.

Keep in mind that some cameras without a viewfinder, like the Nikon Z30, are primarily designed as vlogging cameras. Capturing still images with them is a secondary purpose. The majority of members of this forum still seem to be much more interested in stills photography than videography. We, as a group, don't necessarily represent the market for viewfinderless cameras. I certainly have no interest in one myself, but I know people who do.

My retro Nikon Z fc body allows me to reverse the LCD screen so all I see is its black pebbled back which matches the rest of the camera. It' looks like there is no LCD screen. I use the viewfinder not only to capture images but to review them and occasionally change menu settings. I rarely use the LCD screen for anything.

I went to the search bar and searched for using a camera without a viewfinder. The search brought up this post which gave me some useful information. I don't care how old the post is. Anyway, the really useful part for me was the discussion about using the camera at waist level. I had never thought of that before. I noticed that using my thumb on the shutter release instead of my finger worked better at that level. 😉

Then I'm glad I mentioned shooting at waist level! I found it to be akin to using my old TLR Minolta of years gone by.
