The Beartooth Highway can be quit a challenge to just get to drive, due to snow closures. The trick is to schedule for July, August, or September... maybe! I have tried 3 times to go over it, and was successful only once. That was in September, 2011. It has been rerouted some, so I have been told. I included a photo of the snow depth gauges, they are around 10' high, and used for when plowing the snow so the drivers can find the road.
It is well worth the effort! Charles Kuralt, a TV journalist most known for his "On the Road" trip tips, stated it is the most beautiful road in America! We crossed both directions on the same day, ending on the south end at sunset where I took most of these. Yes, the fox was up there, too!

Thanks for that excellent compliment! My wife does the video recording, me, just still shots... but I drive my wife nuts because I stop soooo often to take an interesting shot(s)! She does help me spot lots of things I missed, and then says I can't take/get them all, lol. You, and he won't regret going there.

I know I have not seen many from that drive, thus the reason for this posting. Hoping to inspire others to drive it! With that said, bear in mind that the Red Lodge side/northeast is VERY steep, and crooked till you get to the top. Still, it is quite spectacular! Glad you liked the post!

Very nice. I rode it two years ago in early June....lot of snow but the road was completely passable. As you neared the top, some of the roadside snow banks were 12 to 15 feet tall. Spectacularly beautiful. I left Red Lodge and went to Cody, WY. Spent two days there and then went back to the park at the Eastern entry. That drive is also spectacular.

Thanks for commenting! I have not been to Cody... but it's on my 'list'. We did go over the Bighorn Mountains, northwest of Sheridan, Wy. (That is quite an interesting town!). The Bighorns are quite beautiful. Spent 2 nights at a 'Guest Ranch" near Shell, Wy. Best 2 nights EVER while vacationing!
Unfortunately for us, it kept snowing on the Beartooth while on this last trip.
We encountered snow banks similar to what you saw, when we went over the 'Snowy Range', in southern Wyoming. That is another very beautiful area. Most people just drive down the interstate, and miss that beauty! Think I just may post some of my photos of it...

It is an awesome, scenic drive! And indeed, the sunset was quite spectacular, a perfect finish to the drive! In my opinion, the south end of the drive is the best part. Thanks for your excellent compliment!
