The Beartooth Highway can be quit a challenge to just get to drive, due to snow closures. The trick is to schedule for July, August, or September... maybe! I have tried 3 times to go over it, and was successful only once. That was in September, 2011. It has been rerouted some, so I have been told. I included a photo of the snow depth gauges, they are around 10' high, and used for when plowing the snow so the drivers can find the road.
It is well worth the effort! Charles Kuralt, a TV journalist most known for his "On the Road" trip tips, stated it is the most beautiful road in America! We crossed both directions on the same day, ending on the south end at sunset where I took most of these. Yes, the fox was up there, too!
What a magnificent area and beautiful photos. Thank you for sharing.

What a Great set of pics... I remember this drive as a gorgeous way to approach Yellowstone from Red Lodge.... I remembered the large white boulders immediately on seeing your clicks... I also think drive to Cody through the national forest is gorgeous from East Yellowstone.
First time I drove my bike up there to see this road, I went West to East then was so amazed, I turned around and went West again. Then met a guy whom asked me if I had done Chief Joesph out of Yellowstone so went and done that marvelous highway both ways. ;-)
Nice set, I have gone through the BearTooth Pass, it is a long drive. Beautiful scenery.

Almost no trace of human involvement! Felt like I was at the top of the world. When I left Laurel it was closed. By the time I arrived it had opened again. There is enough room on the roadway to allow a vehicle to pull off and stop. Great shooting locations. Your photographs do the area justice, very well done!
