These are all very nice and bring back fond memories. I have been over the highway in both directions many times. The first time was shortly after getting by driver's license at 16. The road has been rerouted and improved many times over the years and is much less challenging that it used to be.

As to when you can drive it, the summer months are indeed the best chance. It used to be that they only promised to ty to keep it open between Memorial Dan and Labor Day. I don't know what the current expectations are. I have been snowed-in in Cooke City in the middle of August. Before they built the permanent ski lift, I would see people drive the jeeps off the roadway and use the front winch to create a towrope for a ski trail.

The Beartooth Highway can be quit a challenge to just get to drive, due to snow closures. The trick is to schedule for July, August, or September... maybe! I have tried 3 times to go over it, and was successful only once. That was in September, 2011. It has been rerouted some, so I have been told. I included a photo of the snow depth gauges, they are around 10' high, and used for when plowing the snow so the drivers can find the road.
It is well worth the effort! Charles Kuralt, a TV journalist most known for his "On the Road" trip tips, stated it is the most beautiful road in America! We crossed both directions on the same day, ending on the south end at sunset where I took most of these. Yes, the fox was up there, too!

Great landscape series, minus the fox of course, great by itself, Doug.
