I don't believe that's true for the very large and diverse group in Photo Gallery, UglyHedgehog. But I haven't spent much time there for several years, so it's possible I don't know what I'm talking about

You are just a little bit off the mark. The CRITIQUE section usually generates some honest feedback and discussion of posted photos. OTOH the Photo Gallery section is where you would post pix to gather brief (three word) vapid kneejerk compliments.

I hesitated on posting this but, I really like to comment on others work!!
Lately I there have been many new members posting great images without checking the (Store original) box and their images while very/good to fantastic lack definition making colors look unreal and or imparting a "shimmer"to the image, This makes it hard for me to comment on the images.
I know my comments may not be important to some people, but the very nice, great, etc. comments, do not help those who are wanting to improve their work.
If you are worried about your work being (stolen), it can happen , but most UHH members respect the other photographers and ask permission to edit, alter or use your image and I have seen some offer to pay the right to use.
Off my Soap Box now.

Amen. They just look better if we can pull them up and zoom in. This is really important with wildlife. Many times the photos show too much other stuff and this distracts from the animal itself. So, thanks for humoring us.

I often post to show you how something looks like never for any comments or anything like that. I do not care if people think it's good or bad. And if I determine the regular 2000 or so pixels wide image is sufficient for people to see what it is then I don't do the store original.

And I understand your thoughts.
I am talking about people posting many images a day !! and who's work I think is great but the thumbnail don't show it.

When I first joined here, I quickly discovered that people will critique a photo. Punct. I will post a photo to illustrate a particular point, but they would critique the entire photo. If I want opinions, I will ask for them. I prefer that one of my photos be viewed as a whole; thumbnails are typically adequate for that; ‘store original’ allows people to push their nose against a photo while holding a magnifying glass.

Just to understand your concern: do you want the 'store original' box checked to get the full image without having it be reduced by UHH to fit your screen? Or do you want the EXIF data there for more information about the image (since UHH strips EXIF when reducing the size)?

Paul has recommended some size reduction for posted images. If his recommendations are followed your image may be posted as is with EXIF data intact because UHH won't reduce it further (I'm not quite sure of the exact size over which UHH will reduce an image). However, IMHO, Paul's recommendations are good for many purposes of posted images but I am partial to seeing the full image without any reduction. That is my personal preference and I recognize that sometimes the reductions Paul proposes are useful. I don't follow his recommendations for my images that I post but that is my own druther. When I consider that the full image is not required I usually just don't check the box. That is for images used to make a point rather than for images I consider would be best seen at full size.

I should also note that I am not worried about my images being stolen. I don't have a financial interest in my images. When I post them I recognize that they can be taken by others without much effort. I don't post my work for the purpose of people commenting on it, but if they make constructive comments I will consider them.

Cool we are in the same boat! checking the store box produces a clearer image how it works I don't know but when a thumbnail isn't sharp or the colors are off and the store is checked it appears sharper and the colors are better.

Unless I am going to print something larger than 6"x 8", all my images are processed at 600 x 800 pixels. They print just fine with a 1 inch borderin in an 8 x 10 frame. I started giving some to friends and neighbors years ago and was surprised at how many have framed hung them.

I have also gotten some favorable comments about the sharpness of images I posted in the gallery.

Differnt strokes for different folks.

If you have downsized an original, say 1200 pixels across, then used that downsized image to post and clicked on post original then only that downsized image would show, so the same size image. In order for that box to be useful in viewing a larger image one would need to load the larger image, click the box, and then let the program downsize. Just an FYI.
