Jim thank you so much for getting back to me on your journey in the photographic arts...
It is very kind of you to share in this thread... btw, we are indeed the same age... I'm just a year or so older.
Your Photogenic power pack and heads are extremely robust and built to last...

As a member of the ASMP I had the privilege of assisting many of the top commercial shooters in my market (Washington DC) and remember struggling with those and other monstrous units of lighting equipment trying to get them on hand carts, into old elevators and setup *primarily for architectural renderings in many of the "historic" venues throughout DC. However those challenging times were absolutely priceless in gleaning knowledge from the "Best of the Best" in the Richmond, Washington DC and Baltimore markets. Looking back I cherish the blood sweat and tears latent within 14 hours days on location. Also the Per Diem rates back then were stellar and I was grinning all the way to the bank. :)

Again my very best wishes for your health and happiness moving forward...
"Only that day dawns to which we awake. There are more days to dawn... The sun is but a morning star"
Believe Henry David Thoreau got that right... Positive words I live by... One day at a time.
Jim thank you so much for getting back to me on i... (show quote)

I started my studio life with those old Photogenics. Purchased used, of course. One day a capacitor exploded in one of them and I thought sure that I had been shot, then burst into uncontrollable laughter at the expression on my subject's face when I found myself still alive. The young bride, as I recall was not that amused.

It's great of you to share your thoughts on life, and your background. Those were, for sure, the days. Be safe, prosperous, and HAPPY my new friend.

Again many thanks for your kind words and continued support Michael...
We both share a wonderful common genre... Girls Soccer!
Love your efforts with your gifted granddaughter...
As I previously mentioned you showcase her finesse on the Soccer Pitch where she moves with all the grace and charm of an elegant ballerina...

Looking forward to more of your post in this genre... It's near and dear to me...
Wishing you all the best on your photographic journey Michael...
Cheers! Thomas

Alafoto thank you again for sharing your journey in Studio Photography...
Believe we both understand and appreciate the both the joys and challenges latent within this genre.

I have typically deployed monolights albeit recently I've found the benefits of a power pack to be considerable. Like everything else in our craft it's the ability to effectively use whatever is at one's disposal that can make a huge difference... not so much the gear but instead how to use it effectively...

Oh, I'm at a point where I don't use modeling lamps now (my power pack is battery supplied)... Have come to realize that it's the modifier and distance to subject that matters... Once you're comfortable with the modifier then placement of source becomes controlling (at least in my experience, others may (or may not) have found this to be true.

Hope you're able to continue with studio work Alafoto... It certainly beats fighting to pushing 80lb hand carts into elevators knowing you'll have to wrestle with them again after the shoots a "wrap" lol
Cheers! Thomas

Thank you for your support George... Yes I truly believe it's the personality of the talent that is controlling parameter in portraiture... You have to bond effectively with your sitter if you hope to take a session entirely to the next level... That said, agency talent are a blessing to have in front of the lens in as they are true professional thespians thus realize that it's on them to give you the "Image". Thus it is so important to have a "Story Board" or a collection of tear sheets to communicate i.e. convey what their agency or your client is looking for...

However for naive talent who aren't frequent flyers in a studio venue I've found a large 3x4 foot mirror behind my camera position to be invaluable. This allows them to "see" what they are bringing to the image equation in Real-Time.

Also when working with minors I have a Stage Mom's EZ Boy Recliner directly behind me.
When "Mom" is happy then an aura of tranquility become omnipresent on the set... Life is good :)

Again thank you for your kind words George

Agreed that modeling lights aren't necessary with modifiers, and the Photogenic setup I mentioned was in use early in my career. Decided that used heavy duty pro gear was preferable to equipment designed for intermittent or light duty use. I moved to monolights rather quickly for the sake of convenience.

Thank you for your well wishes, my friend, but at age 77 with some debilitating limitations, my studio days are over. Actually, my working days are over. That's not a bad thing. Now my photos only have to please me, not a sometimes over demanding client with no idea what's possible...or not. Best wishes, and keep sharing your work, please. You may be the inspiration that infuses a youngster with the desire to continue striving to perfect his craft.

You obviously have a great team working with you Thomas. Although the two images have some similarities they each have a different feel to them.

Kudos to you and the entire team!

"You obviously have a great team working with you..." Bill that is so very true... it is the synergy of the aggregate that takes imagery entirely to the next level (especially in portraiture and fashion).

On this session we were focused on creating a narrative that could be used by the model to enhance her opportunities with Agency Representation... The idea was to create drama and yet showcase her wardrobe... She was overjoyed with the results!

And once again my compliments on your visual statement latent in your Nikon Image Space! You certainly have an eye for stellar compositional elements and color harmonies... Both of which are paramount across the entire spectrum of photographic genre...

And kudos on your airborne honey bee image from your May 21 post this year...
Awesome capture with that vintage AF 105mm f/2.8D Nikkor... Love that lens! Love your image with it!
Your D850 came thru with flying colors (pun intended) on that fabulous image!

My very best wishes for much continued success on your photographic journey Bill...
