You can tell Sling which programs to record in advance, and it will comply. Whether the show is daily, weekly, etc. Until it reaches its maximum of 50 hours (for the free DVR service), or if you pay extra ("DVR Plus") 200 hours.
If you are considering Sling for its DVR service, you may wish to this for details:

But a DVR does have a use. Not all TV content can be streamed. An example is local content. Another is movies broadcast by TCM in the middle of the night that can't be played on demand, streaming or otherwise. They don't make all of their movies available after they're broadcast. A DVR with a timer can record this content so that you don't have to be up at 3AM to watch it or play crapshoot with them over what they're going to make available to stream.

I'll have to rely on Sling cloud recording because, as you say, recording while watching is ridiculous. Unless I keep paying Spectrum and add the cost of a DVR, my recording will be limited. It's ironic that "progress" makes life less enjoyable.

One thing to consider is how long the recording is retained. For example, I believe YouTube TV keeps the recordings for 9 months, and then they are removed.

I don't usually wait too long to watch something. One nice thing about the Tivo is that it will keep recordings forever.

One nice thing about discs is that they are never removed until your kids get rid of them.

Sure, you can set up future recordings one time, same program every week, new programs only or new plus old. A series will automatically record every episode until you tell it to stop. New recordings are grouped by title in the selection matrix. Recordings may be scheduled out for several weeks in the future.
The only problem I have encountered is OTA local channels are sometimes affected by wind in the trees. That's true of all OTA systems.
Jerry, I hope this helps. If you need more info I am happy to help.

That brings up a good point. If I remember correctly, Jerry lives a fair distance from local channels, so not sure if he has good access OTA for local channels.
Jerry, are you going to use an antenna for local channels? If not and you want them, you may need a streaming service with local channels - just a thought…
Technically when you stream a video your computer has to store the video to buffer it. So the software just delete that so you don't have a copy on your computer. Some even worse that it doesn't delete the video but hide from you and fill up your HD or SSD.

The local channels are 100+ miles away.

Yep, so if you want local channels, you need a streaming service that provides them. YouTube and Hulu do, not sure about Sling.

Yes, Sling, too - for the lowest price, with recording available.

In general Sling does not include local channels, but they do offer a free antenna to subscribers to get over-the-air reception.
In a few metropolitan areas, Sling does offer local ABC, NBC and Fox programming for an extra fee. Currently ABC is available in 8 cities, NBC in 11, and Fox in 18. Sling does not carry CBS.

I just got the free Sling, and that has lots and lots to watch. Unfortunately, it's mostly old TV shows and "live" movies. You have to tune in at the beginning of the movie. For about $55/month, I can get all the local stations and dozens of cable stations, plus cloud recording.
I discontinued Tivo yesterday, so that's saving me $16.95 a month. The net cost of Sling would be $38. Adding that to the $80 for Spectrum Internet, I'd be paying about $118, compared with an ever-increasing $214 to Spectrum.
What almost shocked me was being able to drop Spectrum TV so easily. Unlike Sirius/XM, I didn't have to spend half an hour on the phone declining different offers.

I was able to drop Spectrum on my name and my wife got Spectrum on her name in about an hour at the store. We got everything switched the same day. I did that so that I can save some money because my wife would be considered as new customer. My wife keeps her maiden name so we just told them we sold the house to each other whenever we need to switch.

They said something about getting something at reduced rate. However, "reduced" is always temporary.
