I know that YouTube TV offers recording of shows through the cloud, but looking online, it seems that you can also record shows on Hulu, Sling, and others without having a DVR. They're all quite a bit less expensive than YouTube TV. Have any of you recorded these channels without your own DVR? I think there is a way to connect a Tivo without going through a cable company.

Why record it again? Just watch it again. Well, unless it's PPV. Then there could be copyright issues.

I dropped YouTube TV when they demanded a copy of my drivers license. They claimed they were rolling out a nationwide requirement, area by area, for account holders to verify their age in compliance with federal law.

I switched to Sling which is definitely an inferior service, and lacks local programming. It does however offer recording which actually works very well.

Jerry, Hulu and Sling are not cheaper. You need to check what you're getting: live programming (and local channels as mentioned above), how many channels, which channels (sports are always more expensive), and the amount of online DVR storage space.

According to a quick google search, Hulu and Sling programming can be recorded to a TiVo (with "special" apps or whatnot), but there is no reason to do that unless you want more than 50 hours of recording available to you at all times with Sling (Hulu has unlimited storage)

Hulu and Sling both offer DvR service similar to UTube TV, but you get what you pay for. If you want live streaming, then Hulu is just as expensive as UTube TV. Sling’s live TV service is less, but has limited channels and very limited local channels. From what I can tell, if you want Live TV plus a full array of local channels, UTubeTV, while expensive, ($72/month) is still the best live streaming service (and offers unlimited DVR storage). If you find a better plan, please let me know.

I actually viewed the real UTube website once, years ago. The unlucky company had to shut it down because of all the traffic looking for YOU-know-who.

As I recall, UTube.com was a site for a manufacturer of some piece of equipment (U-shaped tubes??). Now, you can type UTube into Google search and be taken right where you meant to go

Hi Honey!
Just like various bundles of Elements, Black Friday sales are worth waiting for.
And jumping on!
Because of these sales, I get both Elements for @ $60/bundle, every other year.
Hulu and Curiosity Stream are @ $2.00 each a month to me; I have to agree to autopay for a year, but that's OK.
I have a Tablo2, and a 14tb Seagate just for movies, after I render thru Premier Elements:

Tho I'm checking out Topaz AI to see what that could do me.

Sling would cost me $55, while YouTube would cost me $80. Sling has forty "extra" channels, while YouTube has 146. 99% of the "extras" don't interest me. Both of these offer all the NYC channels - ABC, CBS, etc.

Sling is also available for $45, but it does not include CBS, and there are some CBS shows that I like. It seems that Tivo can record anything - maybe.

I use Sling and have the Sling Air TV device. It can record live tv to a local hard drive. Works very well for me. The regular Sling can record any program to their DVR service. The best feature: Sling integrates their programming and OTA local channels in one seamless program guide. No switching inputs.

Can I program it to record ahead of time, or must I press Record when the show starts? Can I tell it to record a certain show every week?

You can record off of a computer either with screen capture software or an external device that records from the HDMI output, but it's pretty much a waste of time if you can just watch something any time by streaming it.

But a DVR does have a use. Not all TV content can be streamed. An example is local content. Another is movies broadcast by TCM in the middle of the night that can't be played on demand, streaming or otherwise. They don't make all of their movies available after they're broadcast. A DVR with a timer can record this content so that you don't have to be up at 3AM to watch it or play crapshoot with them over what they're going to make available to stream.
