We should never forget our fallen heroes. May they all RIP!

On This Memorial Day

"From now until the end of the world, we and it shall be remembered. We few, we Band of Brothers. For he who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother." ~ William Shakespeare (King Henry V) There is a chain made of blood and iron. The heavy links are anchored in Valley Forge and stretch through Gettysburg, Normandy, Iwo Jima, the Coral Sea, and a thousand battlegrounds. New links were forged in the streets of Saigon, Fallujah and Mogadishu.

Sometimes I wonder just how many of the younger generation who have not served, know the meaning of Memorial Day and what they should be thankful for?

I look at my flag and give Thanks to all who defended it, even those who didn’t want to be there.

Yesterday, we posted about Mark Twain; and we spoke of his "wisdom." We also quoted a few of his words. Today, I would like to add a bit more to MY own comments that have been a part of MY own life.
During the Christmas days of 2004, I spent a couple hours at Arlington. . .And, Mark Twain was "with" me as I sat "among the Fallen." I recollected "The War Prayer" (a short story he wrote); and, I found this film on YouTube based on that story:

I feel it is appropriate to think about as WE do remember this Memorial Day in 2023 . .
=============
I speak also with the "approval" of MY own father who passed away in 2001. . .He fought in THREE wars beginning as a teen-ager in 1937 when he volunteered to defend the FIRST democratically-elected government of Spain. He took a bullet at Brunete while fighting the Fascist forces of Franco, Hitler and Mussolini. He volunteered again; and, was three years in the US Navy (in the Aleutian Islands). Upon mustering out in 1946, he volunteered again to fight for democracy. This time in Israel (1947-49) as a Colonel in that country's Air Force during the fight for its independence from the British Empire.
