"MY own father who passed away in 2001. . .He fought in THREE wars beginning as a teen-ager in 1937 when he volunteered to defend the FIRST democratically-elected government of Spain. He took a bullet at Brunete while fighting the Fascist forces of Franco, Hitler and Mussolini. He volunteered again; and, was three years in the US Navy (in the Aleutian Islands). Upon mustering out in 1946, he volunteered again to fight for democracy. This time in Israel (1947-49) as a Colonel in that country's Air Force during the fight for its independence from the British Empire."
I will never hear the term "freedom fighter" again without thinking of your father.
Thanks, John:
I will let him know when I next speak to him <smile>. I still talk to my folks; And, my grandfathers (both) of them: They were both union organizers before WW I (one a baker; the other, a marine telegrapher). . .Our "conversations" usually take place when I discuss the "Day's News" with them, while walking about the house [Some people think I am talking to myself. Not the case. . .I'm just looking for an intelligent conversation. . .And, who better than those who brought you up; and, taught you to "think straight!" They may have "passed on;" but, they're always with us! <smile>]
Honored once a year...the rest of the time...we have thrown it all away.
What a waste.
Very nice - in a way.
I went to a parade yesterday, and the opening speech almost brought tears to my eyes. I'm glad he stopped when he did. At least 1.6 million Americans have been killed in wars.
"At least 1.6 million Americans have been killed in wars."
Odd that we have lost a million in TWO YEARS with a war with a virus and we seem to shrug it off.

Sometimes I wonder just how many of the younger generation who have not served, know the meaning of Memorial Day and what they should be thankful for?
Even among those who claim they know often confuse it with Veterans Day.

On This Memorial Day
"From now until the end of the world, we and it shall be remembered. We few, we Band of Brothers. For he who sheds his blood with me shall be my brother." ~ William Shakespeare (King Henry V) There is a chain made of blood and iron. The heavy links are anchored in Valley Forge and stretch through Gettysburg, Normandy, Iwo Jima, the Coral Sea, and a thousand battlegrounds. New links were forged in the streets of Saigon, Fallujah and Mogadishu.
We should never forget our fallen heroes. May they... (
