Hi,
Thank You. I am going to use your suggestion. I do know alot about exposure. I was just trying to understand M vis. Av or TV. The more I read pro's use AV most of the time. I am trying to get a faster shurtter speed and still ctrl. my background. I know I can use TV to ctrl my shutter speed but I lose the ctrl of my f stop. I try to keep my lens as wide open as I can to blur out the back ground. Most of my work is wild life so I don' care about depth of field that much. I use spot metering and focus on the eye. I have spent years shooting images in Africa an other west coast states. In Africa you can not leave your vehicle so tripods are OUT. I use a 7D with 100-400 and Sigma 150-500 and a bean bag still get some Camera shake and that is why I was looking to use a higher shutter speed especically at 400 to 500mm.

Thank You,

Arnie

Good morning,

Thanks for getting back to me. The only one I'm married to its my wife. So I am open to any suggestions. You are right about the the ISO settings. Yesterday I talk to Canon and with the new 7D firmware update. This new option is auto ISO. What this does is to keeps you in the ballpark. You still have fine tune your exposure. I only have to do this when I am hand holding my camera in difficult positions and fast moving subjects. If I am shooting from a tripod this is unnecessary. Thank you for your feedback.

Happy holidays!

Arnie

What mode to shoot in depends on your subject...I shoot manual more than any other mode, but then I shoot macro & manual is the best for that....To summarily dismiss a shooting mode as "overrated" simply shows a lack of knowledge of shooting scenarios...

Hello,

I called Canon today to find out how to adjust my exposure in Manual mode. I would like to use in 1000 shutter speed at F4.0 he said the only way I can just exposure is to change my shutter speed, my F stop or ISO??? Is this the way it has to be done or am I missing some thing??? Please let me know how to use Manual exposure.

Thank Arnie

Peterson is always talking about getting the "correct exposure" using Manual Mode. In Manual mode you can quickly change the shutter speed without changing the Aperture and the Aperture without changing the Shutter Speed, all towards getting the exposure meter to the Zero. Then if you want you can switch to changing only the exposure value. Meanwhile you can see the effects of each change right from viewing the LCD.

For each subject there are at least six "correct" exposures, each depending on your choice of what you see as "correct" in the image effect you want to portray which usually has to do with depth of field and what you want the background to look like.

Check out Peterson's you-tube lessons. he has great energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to share his ideas. Check out http://www.ppsop.com/index.aspx Take a course!

I shoot in manual quite frequently. Some shoots I will do every pic in manual. I guess I use manual about 30-50% of the time. Its much simpler.
But then again apparently I know stuff all about photography - heck, I even take the strap off my camera and throw it in the cupboard never to be seen again!

OH man, you need to read a book. Everyone here seems to like the one by Bryan Peterson. "Understanding Exposure." I believe.

If you have to have 1/1000 at f4 for some reason, then there is only ONE ISO that will get you there. Which one??? I have no idea as it will depend on the light at that time.

Three things determine exposure and the Canon guy told you all three - they all work together.

There's filters too... that the Canon guy and remarkably the remarkable Captain C failed to mention. 8-)
