Hello,

I called Canon today to find out how to adjust my exposure in Manual mode. I would like to use in 1000 shutter speed at F4.0 he said the only way I can just exposure is to change my shutter speed, my F stop or ISO??? Is this the way it has to be done or am I missing some thing??? Please let me know how to use Manual exposure.

Thank Arnie

Look up "exposure triangle", and maybe Brian Petersons "Understanding Exposure" book. Its obvious you are needing some education in this area.

OH man, you need to read a book. Everyone here seems to like the one by Bryan Peterson. "Understanding Exposure." I believe.

If you have to have 1/1000 at f4 for some reason, then there is only ONE ISO that will get you there. Which one??? I have no idea as it will depend on the light at that time.

Three things determine exposure and the Canon guy told you all three - they all work together.

Arnie, I think that is the ONLY way to adjust expose in auto or manual. The exposure triangle only has three sides. And technically ISO doesn't really control exposure, it controls sensitivity. If you fix at 1000/f4 the only thing left is ISO.
Or am I missing something here ?

Yes,

I ordered Petersons book. I been learning to use M exp. to have more ctrl. over my setting other than TV or AV. Next week we will be shooting eagles from a boat and I wanted to use a higher shutter speed to lower any boat movement.

Thanks
Arnie

if you want a higher shutter speed you must either open the aperture ,increase the iso or increase the light .there is no magic, wheather you use manual,AV or TV .lets say the light is fixed and the iso is fixed as well ,to raise the shutter speed you must open the aperture as well .I don't know why people think manual is so great to me it's just slower .If I'm using Av and want to use a higher shutter speed I would open the aperture or in crease the iso .if in Tv I would set the s speed higher and the aperture would open

Get out on the boat set your shutter speed s at 1/500 sec or 1/250 sec let your camera pick the rest . It depends on how long your lens is . If its onle a 50 mm you can proably pick a slower shutter 1/100 . Look at your display it will tell you. Over , under, blury fuzzey . What ever . Or pick apture and let camera pick s speed. same thing open up close down tell you have it

Yes there is the 3 sides to the exposure triangle that will achieve this exposure. You do need to change the iso as have fixed the other 2 but the other option (Keeping ISO lower) would be add more light. But would need to be a continuous source at that shutter speed because you wont sync with flash at this speed.

Not surprisingly, the Canon tech got it right. Unless those three all agree, your photo will not be correctly exposed.

That's the exposure 'triangle' that has been explained here already. Here's a link to a camera exposure simulator that show's how one of the three can effect the exposure. Mouse over to the 'Manual' button and play with the shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. Then remember to look at how sunny the day is since this will change the exposure as well. I found that in your example of shutter 1/1000 and f4 you'd need an ISO of about 400 on a mostly sunny day. This simulator is simple and easy to see how the exposure setting change as you play with the camera settings. Note the exposure meter at the bottom of the simulator. Your camera should have one similar to this along one of the sides or the top or bottom of you view finder or the LCD.

Hi,
Thank You. I am going to use your suggestion. I do know alot about exposure. I was just trying to understand M vis. Av or TV. The more I read pro's use AV most of the time. I am trying to get a faster shurtter speed and still ctrl. my background. I know I can use TV to ctrl my shutter speed but I lose the ctrl of my f stop. I try to keep my lens as wide open as I can to blur out the back ground. Most of my work is wild life so I don' care about depth of field that much. I use spot metering and focus on the eye. I have spent years shooting images in Africa an other west coast states. In Africa you can not leave your vehicle so tripods are OUT. I use a 7D with 100-400 and Sigma 150-500 and a bean bag still get some Camera shake and that is why I was looking to use a higher shutter speed especically at 400 to 500mm.

Thank You,

Arnie

That's contradictory. It sounds like you memorized all the components of a cake without the slightest idea of amounts required or when to mix them. I hate to sound cruel but you really need to get a good cook book (exposure) or stick to cake mixes in a box (point and shoot).
