What good is an appropriations bill from the House if it can’t survive Senate mark ups.

Learn the process
House writes a bill
Senate writes their own
Disagree they go to conference to work out different
Back to house for approval
To senate for a approval
To president for signature

For the last 30 years we have hardly ever gotten past step one “ no matter which party controls house “ in fact the last few years they hardly even try.

But the 14 says
“”” Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law,
“””

And much of the debt ceiling bill passed by the house takes action against items that have already been signed into law by past action.

It seems to me that the house republicans are trying to legislate again that which they did not have enough support to accomplish in the past.

Whoa!!!!

The current spending was passed by a Democrat-controlled Congress, under one of their "omnibus" spending packages before Republicans got control of the House in November 2022.

Don't pass this off on Republicans. Your sweetheart Nancy P, was totally responsible for this mess. And BTW, it was Kevin McCarthy who stated that the House would go back to regular order when he became Speaker.

Does it matter how it was passed… it is now “ law”..isn’t it .
By the way you thought is a load of bull. The house does not pass bills alone . Congress does. The last omnibus passed the senate with a vote of 90-6 !!!!

I would love to see Republicans ( or democrats for that matter) go back to proper order .

Continuing resolutions and omnibus’ ( polite way of getting out of debating appropriation bills) have been passed by both parties for last 30-40 years.

Glad I could help you. Appropriations bills are different

And then there are the “ authorization” bills we haven’t even touched on yet. Another opportunity for change.

[quote=jcboy3]It's an impasse because Republicans don't want to increase the debt ceiling, but don't want to accept responsibility for not doing so.

When all hell breaks loose, it's going to be the worst thing that ever happened, and subsequent deficit spending to recover from the mess will dwarf what's come before.

Democrats will blame Republicans, and vice versa. But I'll bet the blame

It is really not a matter of left or right. We all must finally realize that years of deficit spending on both sides has driven the debt ceiling so high that it cannot continue to rise driving more inflation. It comes down to simple math. You can't spend you way to financial stability by master carding your visa payment. For starters, why not investigate where all those "borrowed dollars" are being spent? Take the axe to wasteful spending that does not meet the test of effective efficiency, not political preference. But stop acting like printing more money (raising the debt ceiling) is the solution to the problems our country is facing. Stop acting like children fighting over toys. Here ends my rant.

Have you seen the latest GQB missive?
it seems they will try to pass work related requirements on Medicare.
Unless, of course Biden doesn't agree to their pork barrel demands of their lobbyists.
Any youse guys have a disabled elderly women on Medicare?
Maybe she could be a greeter for the RNC headquarters.

I am a disabled male on medicare. It really disturbs me that there is discussion about cutting
benefits at a time when we are advocating increasing the debt ceiling yet again. Does anybody at the White House have an advanced degree in business management?

I have not heard anything about cutting any “Medicare” benefit. The discussion was work requirements for “ Medicaid “ not Medicare and it was not the White House it was the house bill.

Yes but the issue is spending - not borrowing and not taxing .

The house has the right idea if they should just do it (1) without the politics of trying to change passed laws and (2) do it at the right time and place.
In my opinion if they took a hardline on the 12 annual appropriations bills AND refused to consider any CR ( continuing resultions) or worse still any Omnibus spending bill they would get a heck of lot more support .

There will have to be some compromise to meet the date deadline and nobody wants to blink. It's like some stupid macho bar fight. To me, this obstinacy on both sides to work for the common good of their constituents is pretty indicative of the quality of representatives (that includes Senators, not just Representatives) that both parties have elected. They will get theirs, too bad about the rest of the country.
