This is an exterior view of the abandoned iron ore loading pier in Marquette, Michigan taken 26 years ago. The pier looked like it had been abandoned for at least a decade prior to that. I climbed inside and took several pictures, one of which I have posted here previously. The pier still exists but all of the wooden structure and train rails are gone. You can find it on Google Earth. It has special meaning for me because I well remember dragging my heavy tripod and 4x5 gear thru the weeds and rotted wooden parts, scaring up several rats, to get into the concrete portion to photograph. Couldn't do that now if my life depended on it.

I made a two-image panorama of the 4x5 negative which resulted in a 272 mb 23 x 26 inch image I edited in Photoshop. I plan to have a 16 x 20 version of it printed soon by a good friend who has a professional quality Epson printer.

I saw this structure when I first visited Marquette in 2015. Had no idea what it was and what it was there for.

Nice photo.

Thank you hpucker99. It does look quite different from how it looked back in 1997. All the wooden structure and rails are gone. I'm not sure what plans Marquette has for it.

Beautifully done, Jack, great perspective and composition.

Thank you Joe. A little earlier today, a good friend made professional quality 16x20 prints of this image and another from inside the structure. They came out really nice.

I'm surprised that you could get near it let alone on it and in it, even 26 years ago.

Thanks Frank. Ha, there was no one there to tell me I couldn't, and no signs either. There was graffiti inside so I definitely was not the first. It was hard dragging my heavy tripod and 4x5 gear thru the wooden structure, but it was worth it.

Great lines, Jack! Geometry abounds.

Thanks John. All the leading lines are part of what attracted me to this.

Here’s what it looks like today. There is now a photo op that occurs 2x a year to shoot the sunrise right through the length of the building. Photo Credit - Christine Rainey
