Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anybody attended a workshop that blew them away (in a good way)? I like the looks of some of the offerings from Santa Fe, Provincetown FAWC, etc., but I haven't signed up for any so far except for some Underwater Photo Workshops years ago.

Any recommendations? Any to stay away from? I probably won't be doing any safaris in Africa or hunting Yeti in Nepal, so probably this hemisphere would be more my speed.

Thanks in advance.

My best workshop was with Mike Mezeul. He is a Nikon Ambassador and has been published in National Geographic, but is personable, knowledgeable, and approachable. He also shoots right alongside you at least part of the time.

His classes include both shooting and processing. The workshop I did with him was for the night sky at Big Bend National Park. He had thoroughly scouted all of our field locations. There were no surprises. I stayed an extra day and ran into him with the folliwing group. They had run into some bad weather the night before, but their "Plan B" was better than a lot of Plan As in other workshops. I was a little bit jealous of where they had been.

The only problem is that you have to be very aware and act very quickly. His sessions sell out a year or more in advance. Other than night sky, his destinations include White Sands, Norway, Tornado Alley, and others. I haven't seen if he is still doing a Hawaiian Volcanoes class. Find his website via his name.

Locations are far less important than the person conducting the shoot. In 2015 I was invited by Canon to attend a workshop in Yellowstone N.P.hosted by Adam Jones, photohrapher. I am not responsible for the word photographer attached to his name. At the time there was a supposedly all-world football player by the same name. If the football player had been half the player that the photographer was a photographer he might still be a player of football. I went on to attend three more shoots that this man offered. All three shoots were superbly run. Sites had been very well scouted and selected. We saw many different types of settings and shot both sunrises and sunsets. One shoot was in Kalispel, MT. where we shot exotic animals. We shot fine art in the U. P. of Michigan and snow leopards in Montana. While he is a Canon Ambassador of Light he also operates indepenently out of Louisville, KY. His web site offers a complete menu of shoots. His critique sessions are very complete. Hard to find a better teacher, he is excellent for all levels of student.

I went to White Pocket with Greg Vaughn of the Muench group. It was well arranged and executed. He was quite aware of my physical incapabilities and worked with them. I go on workshops because they cover an area I want to see and photograph, not because of who is running it. I've been really disappointed in some and not so much in others. I'm an independent sort and know what I like. Unfortunately, most photographers don't agree with me! Some leaders work to accommodate my tastes. Some don't. What I wish is that they would post what their thrust is going to be BEFORE I paid the $$!

Some years back I went with a gentleman named Jim Stamates on a "Funshop" in the Grand Tetons. He and his wife took us places we never would have found on our own. He knew where the Elk would cross the river and where the Grizzly would be feasting on a carcass. It was a great trip and I felt like he really cared about each participant. I would do it again in a flash. He does Wyoming, Alaska, and Africa fun shops. You can find his website easily.

I've never attended a boutique workshop. However, I have spent considerable time at photo industry conventions over the decades, such as PMAI, DIMA, PSPA, PPA, SEPCON... most of which went the way of the dinosaurs, about a decade ago. If there is a photo industry convention and trade show that happens in your region, I strongly suggest that you go. Trade shows and conventions are becoming less relevant, but only because the Internet is an easy cop-out.

Blue Hour https://bluehourusa.com/ Paul Nguyen, Allie Richards, Kris Simard. I've been on a few with them and they are terrific.

In 1975 I was living on a commune in rural western Virginia. I was just getting in to photography when I heard about a weekend class given by Nikon in North Carolina about 100 miles away. Nikon did traveling weekend workshops back then. I made the drive, paid the fee and was blown away by what professionals were doing in the world of photography. I haven't been without a camera since that weekend.

I have attended three workshops given by Adam Jones. I found them to be excellent. I would go to more but age and physical problems have reduced my mobility. Adam is a patient and good instructor. Highly recommend.

Alain Briot and his wife, Natalie, run fantastic workshops in the Southwest and West. Both were highly trained artists before they became photographers. Mark Adamus is another fantastic photographer--he teaches composition and post processing better than anyone I have met. I wish I was half as good as him. Other workshops I've greatly enjoyed were those of Nick Page, John Gerlach (Landscape + Wildlife), and Nasim Mansurov.

Scott Davenport’s workshops are excellent. He holds several workshops at various locations in the West, and they are excellent. With only a max of six attendees, the workshops are more like an outing with good friends than a classroom.

Where did you see snow leopards in Montana? Seems thrilling and I’m within a days drive from anywhere in Montana.
