A new $1200 camera for $400? That's cheaper than a good used one. Being grey doesn't mean cheaper build. You took the risk of paying so low for a good camera, would you feel better paying full price, just because for $800 more there's less risk if something goes wrong? All my Nikons and my friends' Nikons go years with no problems, often bought used. You are a risk-taker or you wouldn't have bought it in the first place, just live with it and enjoy the camera.

No he said it's $400 cheaper not for $400. So if the normal price is $1200 he paid $800. However, I think it's worth it for a 1/3 off.

Sorry. Nikon do not repair grey market cameras if it needs repairs later on. That slso applies to Canon

Try to avoid parroting "advice" you get from the Hawgster parrot flock. Mostly really not worth repeating.

You posted a Nikon 610 for sale and it displays a USA s/n, which pretty much indicates that you live in the US. You apparently assume the OP also lives in the US. Try reading the thread. Your "advice" is incorrect. If the OPs Asian zone camera needs repair, Nikon will handle it ... but acoarst not for free.

Canon has no such restriction for paid non warrantee repairs.

Got a camera from Amazon ( via third party seller ) .. was £300 ($372) cheaper than normal .. supposed to get a warranty card with it , contacted seller who said they dont have one but they will guarantee it themselves for 2 years ... Called Nikon who looked up the serial number and said it was an import from Asia ( grey Import ) so not covered by Nikon UK or EU for guarantee ... Mmm .. do I keep it and save £300 or send it back for refund ? Risk it for a biscuit ? Its a New Camera D7500 by the way not used ..

Nikon USA will NOT handle it period. Under warranty only Asia Nikon will repair it, he will have to send it to them.
Many camera repair shops in the usa will repair it for a charge, but NOT Nikon USA.

I believe that if the OP bought a camera intended for the UK market in the UK and has a receipt, Nikon USA will repair it for a fee, but that isn't the case here.

Again, Nikon USA repair is the same company as Nikon USA. And Nikon USA will not repair or touch a gray market camera no matter where it came from.

So you have zero clue and no answers.
Nikon USA has NOTHING to do with this. Warrantee coverage is NOT any concern.

The camera will be repaired by Nikon if the owner pays for it ... and the owner has saved $372 toward future repairs with no expiration date.

Keep parroting BS. Its your identity.

Nikon USA is not involved here, not at all. So why are you parroting that nonsense ?

Buying grey market...

If the camera works fine and doesn't break within the usual warranty period... you're golden and you saved £72.

If the camera fails during the usual warranty period... you're screwed and will probably have to spend more than £72 getting it repaired.

The sellers "2 year guarantee" is worth about as much as the paper it's printed upon. If the camera breaks, good luck getting them to honor their "store warranty". Chances are they will be out of business or just ignore you if you try to make a warranty claim.

Personally I try to avoid buying grey market for complex products like cameras. On the other hand, I can't recall ever making a warranty claim on a camera, so probably could have saved quite a bit of money over the years. But, who knows! (P.S. I also don't buy "extended warranties", regardless whether they are "factory" or "store" warranties.)

I also ONLY buy things on Amazon sold by or "fulfilled" by Amazon. I would consider gray market warranted by Amazon, too, since they're unlikely to go out of business and are pretty good about making things right.

NO, you have no clue. NIKON WILL NOT SERVICE IT PERIOD. THEY WILL NOT EVEN LOOK AT IT. I HAVE WORKED FOR NIKON FOR 5 YEARS. HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED FOR THEM?

Get a clue. Read the thread.
Do your own research.
Your resume is meaningless.

Ive worked for Nikon UK for
at least as long as you have.

You bought a discontinued, end-of-the-line DSLR in 2023. Saving nearly $400 for an unused model, rather than $400 on an used specimen of the camera body. If you'd bought used, you'd have the same repair issues, paying for any future issue out of pocket, assuming the UK policy differs on grey-market.

Only you can judge your decision. But, the issue isn't grey-market, rather, why buy such an old product "new" in 2023? The risk is low that the camera will ever have a problem while you own the body.

There was another thread yesterday about how long Canon (and others) will support any camera body. That support is not unlimited, and relatively short for all the bodies other than their top of the top-tier. Whether grey or not, after a few years, now especially for DSLRs, a repair isn't going to be an option.

Yup, words of wisdom. I love my D850 and am keeping it, knowing some time in near-future needed repair might not be available.
