I posted a shot on FB recently and a friend suggested it might look good in B&W. While I love B&W and have made quite a few shots into B&W, this particular shot had such nice tones in blue, rusty reds, and yellow that I felt it might not work as well for a B&W. I did make one and then also one in sepia to maintain some of the warmness of the color one. Lastly, I did a hybrid of the shot to give some color back. Here are the four shots -- what do you think?

Of course, Color is always better, but this is the one in a thousand shots that could pull it off as a B&W

I prefer the first one, followed by the last one.

I agree with your friend, it's B&W for me.

I don't like it. There is to much detail without an overall scene for me. More contrast and you'd lose the shadows, less contrast and its wishy washy.

But the sepia tones looks to suit it very well. Not a fan of the hybrid, neither one or the other.

To me the high contrast BW is the better but if the elements are divided then i like retaining the rust color. Actually the shot is very complicated and can be made into several different cropped shots. A lot of meat in the photo and you can serve several different meals.

One shot, crop so the tube is gone and there is a rusty done left and right. This gives a three areas of rust.

Another shot is the tube, one dome, and the white steps.

I also love the color of the rusty, peeling paint and so I choose the first and also the hybrid. I love b&w, but to me, this doesnt show it best.

I have never understood the appeal of black and white except maybe in some low light situations. Without color, much of the message of the image can be lost.

Number 1 would be my favorite, with the hybrid as my second. The red rust scattered over the photo just carries the story.

I think as the artist it’s entirely up to you as to which to choose.

When making such a choice it might be worth considering what each format has to offer and how that adds to the story you are trying to tell.

I go for the last too…love the peeling paint and rust in the B&W…not so much for the safety yellow handrails though. Nice set

I would favor the shoot that pleases you and the viewer would see if they visited the photo site. That would tell the story accurately! It's your story.

The color version is very appealing to the eye. The b&w image can be improved by just adding contrast.
