We are now how many generations into viewing countless hours of television, all in the horizontal format. Why so many people use their phones in a vertical stance when shooting movies is beyond me. Don't they think it looks different? Does it never occur to them to turn the camera horizontal so they can get in the whole scene and not make everyone dizzy by panning back and forth? I think Apple and Samsung should default video to the horizontal format and make the user push some buttons to make it go vertical with a Are You Sure warning. OK, rant over.

A bit strong isn't it for a photographic question? By the way who is it you are talking to? Why would you come across with such a negative attitude when you could have easily just skipped over the entire thread? Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed today? Things not going well for you? Why inject that negativity in this thread. Hell, this isn't even The Attic where such things are tolerated. But not here. I think you owe someone an apology if not the entire group.

Sigh…..Folks: maybe just go and have a warm cup of Tulsi Rose tea ?

I rather that it fills the screen and I can simply flip the TV 90 degrees.

I quite often see this when watching videos on Youtube, what causes this vertical view, is it because it was taken on a phone being held vertical rather then sideways...?
This annoying look comes from shooting vertically. Trying to get my guests to hold the phone horizontally as they shoot whales swimming by the boat is hardly worth the effort as almost no one takes this advice. It is such a waste of the megapixels that all cell phones have these days. I don't understand it.

All LCD or OLED TV are considered lightweight even the big 80". Much lighter than my old 34" CRT TV.

We are now how many generations into viewing count... (
show quote)
People would shoot a lot more horizontal using a typical camera even if the subjects are better suited to vertical format. People use vertical or horizontal format not so much because of what they are shooting (or how it would be viewed) but rather how they feel that the phone or camera should be held.

If I'm filming a tall waterfall or something similar, I hold my phone vertically. If I'm shooting a landscape, I hold my phone horizontally.
Next question....

While I much rather have a video shot in vertical format fills the screen and I would flip the TV 90 degrees but when I do a video I always shoot in horizontal format regardless of the subject because I realize most people don't want to flip the screen and if you display a video in vertical format on a horizontal oriented TV you throw away way too muc screen real estate which I really hate.
Could not find out how to subscribe. How? Where?

I presume that anyone paying attention can see that the horizontal background is an enlargement of the "center" part of the vertical picture. I presumed that the TV stations started this nonsense to amaze the viewers with their creativity and fill up the TV screen; sooner or later they should start using the side panels for advertising instead.
