In the spring of 1945 I was driving from McAllen, Texas to Pampa, Texas, following my husband who was in the Air Force. Somewhere along that road passing through a little town (I don't remember where) there was, right in the middle of the main street, a statue of Popeye. I asked someone about that and was told that this was a spinanch-growing area, but sales were not going well until someone suggested that Popeye eat spinach. When Popeye started eating spinach so did a lot of people--and that saved the town!
