Either term is correct. one in normal American common name: Buffalo, the other, scientific name: Bison bison.

Just like the brown rat (common name); Rattus norvegicus (scientific name). (Also called the Norwegan rat.)

From Wikipedia: "Though "bison" might be considered more scientifically correct, "buffalo" is also considered correct as a result of standard usage in American English, and is listed in many dictionaries as an acceptable name for American buffalo or bison. Buffalo has a much longer history than bison, which was first recorded in 1774.[51]"

Nit pick much????

Brought to you by the folks who insisted that it was the "Indies".

Dictionaries, the world of connotation! And where terms are democratically defined. (Words are still voted on, just like their "usages".)

FWIW, the scientific name is the better descriptor. At least for those who have to divine as to what bones are being looked at. And some of us can tell the difference.

You will have to let us know if this was UP or LP.

Serious for a moment, a great shot of the bison.

I used to have a couple of filled out books. I even included a couple of the wooden nickels. Sold them to a friend of mine when I got drafted. Wish I kept some of them.

Sidenote: Why did they stop making the bison coins? It was hard to have the bison sit still for the poses.

It was a play on words. Everyone I know calls them buffalo nickles.......

To each his own, except when they want to change me.
(They quit minting them in 1938. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_nickel, even Wikipedia re-directs from "bison nickle".)

I actually rode a Buffalo once in the Philippines - a Water Buffalo with long, sweeping horns.

We have a farm that radishes them here in upstate NY just a few miles southeast of Albany. A year or so ago some of the herd escaped a swam across the Hudson River. It took a while to round them up.

I love those big beasts.
As a kid, I always liked to visit the Bison's at the zoo. Of all the great animals
at the Zoo, the Bison, have always been my favorite.

While working on Camp Pendleton USMC Base, there are about 50 (or more), Bison
roaming about in the highlands of the Base. They are protected from (humans), but
during the very cold winters, it's not abnormal for one or two of the large Male
Bison, to make a trip down to the lower portions of the Marine Corp base.
I remember driving along the main road on the way to work, and seeing a movement
in the high brush along side the roadway. Suddenly, out of no where a huge 6 foot tall
beast emerged from the thicket and onto the roadway and stops traffic until they feel
like moving on. Beautiful animals, indeed.
