Thanks! The consensus seems to be Steve Perry’s at the top of the recommended list.

Yes, just going through Steve’s videos and books will bring forward a comfortable knowledge of the menus and camera optimization. I have a 780 and Z7 and learned a lot.

There are many tutorial videos on YouTube for the D850 that may be of interest to you. I bought my D850 when it first came out and for stills photography it's amazing. It's not the greatest camera for video, in my opinion, but it's adequate. I did not take a break from photography, and the D850 is my 3rd Nikon DSLR, so the learning curve wasn't as steep for me, and I haven't found it necessary to buy any additional books on the D850. I have found plenty of good D850 videos on the internet. Good luck with your camera and most important, have fun with your photography.

I purchased the D850 as a retirement gift to myself and it wasn't cheap by any means. But as a number of respondents have said, "There is plenty of info videos on Youtube". Steve Perry was really good for me in the beginning as others that have put out the info on the D850. I am going on 5 years with this camera and I have got to tell you I shoot nearly everyday, even imitating photos by other photographers. I find that is the best way to learn to use that camera or any camera. The camera has so many features, I am still amazed by what I learn about it over all of this time. Remember, I said I shoot pretty much everyday. Boy, do I have fun using this camera, you do the same.

I like watching classes on CreativeLive. There will be one for the 850.

After being away from serious photography for over 10 years, this Christmas I found a D850 under the tree. Since my last camera was a D700 (again not used in a long time,) I find the need for a guide(s) to get me going again.
The Nikon manuals are uninspiring, and a quick perusal of Darrell Young’s “Mastering the D850” didn’t give me what I want: a kind of triage set up with a good quick start overview to get me going, then later chapters set up to explain the more nuanced capabilities. I’m also wondering if either Mike Hagen’s or Steve Perry’s guides to autofocus settings would also be of help.
Thanks in advance for any help here.

The Steve Perry book you mentioned is well worth it and answers questions we probably never would have thought to ask. It is great.
