I'm afraid the cold would take all the fun out of this adventure for me. Don't like the cold anymore and I backpacked and slept in the snow years back and loved it! Stay warm, have a ball and post some pics for us.

I just signed up for this trip in February. Am I nuts!!?? We will be traveling quite a bit and staying in farmhouses with dorm style rooms and the bathroom down the hall. We will be shooting the aurora borealis, ice caves, reindeer, etc. I am taking my Canon 5d mkII, a 7d as backup, a super wide angle lens (borrowing from my brother) lots of batteries and warm clothes and warm boots. Has anyone ever done this??

YOU snatched this right off my BucketList!!!! I am so, so jealous and think you are the luckiest ever to have decided to do this. It will be amazing and we will all be waiting for some pix from you. Totally enjoy and report back!
WOW.... I am green

Yes, I have been mentioning it around the family to get them accustomed to the idea so when I spring it on them, they will remember I warned them about it. Nobody else seems chomping at the bit to go, but it has been my dream for a few years now ... right after Newfoundland... when I realized it was only a three hour flight from NYC!!! Hey, that is almost local! hahaha
I truly am happy for you for doing this! And it makes it even more realistic for me... so there.
:D :D

that's awesome. I saw a similar one last year for Norway, which is where I want to go. However, it's just not going to happen for me right now with three young kids!

Well, I guess I paid my dues - raised my kids as a single mother, now have 6 grandchildren. I'm just catching up on as many adventures as I can. Be patient and enjoy your children.

Awesome. I hope you post lots of pics!

Have you ever heard of the Norwegian coastal service, run by Hurtigruten? One sets off every day from Bergan and sails along the coast, calling at every little town, right up round the North Cape, almost to the Russian border, before returning to Bergan.
The round trip takes nearly two weeks, although you can do it one way as well. There are several boats of varying age; some are almost new and quite luxurious. I would love to go again.
Just google Hurtigruten.

It's a wonderful country for photo ops. Green steaming waters, grand waterfalls, and ice flows. Hope you like herring though. It's still the major export there. And last names ending in "detter" or Son" or "sen" and a male first name is the norm, like Ericsdetter would be the daughter of Eric. All the names there are like that.
I spent 3 weeks up north doing photos and ice cores many years ago and enjoyed the country enough so that every time I fly to europe, I take a stop over in Iceland for a few days. Icelandic Air picks up the tab to encourage tourism.
If you are staying at farm houses and inns, may I suggest that you get your hard liquer at the Duty Free and give bottles as gifts. Alchohol has a big tax there outside of the U.S. Military bases and the airport duty free shop.
Have fun and you should come back with fewer aches and pains. Those mineral hot springs are terrific. Bright green steaming waters laced with Copper.
Mt. Heckla (not sure about spelling) is also there and has errupted numerous times of late. Great night shots if it does errupt.
Have fun, and bring lots of memory cards.
By the way, Iceland is the first Democratic country in the Western hemisphere. Although under Danish rule for centuries, they had democratic meetings and representative government there long before Columbus. They held their governing meetings at the Great rift. It's the northern edge of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. I'm sure your guide will tell you all about it.

I lived there for two years a number of decades ago. You will love it. Word of advice, Worry more about the rain and less about the snow. Rain can come at you horizontally and will soak you ( and your camera ) in seconds.

Always check on your day in the barrel.

Sarge, I'm old enough to know what you meant about the barrel, shame on you. ;-)

My wife and I are heading to Anchorage, AK the last week in Feb. and first week in March for the Iditarod and see if the Northern Lights might be turned on; so we don't think you are nuts. The wife isn't going for the bath down the hall though. We have been there before and she found out that indoor plumbing is optional not a requirement.
