Dear Jerryc41,
I Know you are old enough to know fact from fiction but I like the best definition I ever heard of what TV is.
It's like a salesman in your living room trying to sell you something, but if you like it, watch it !
Right. The purpose of TV isn't to sell TVs. Their main use is to make money for lots of companies. Watching TV used to be free. Not any more. There are dozens of companies willing to charge you $10 - $20 a month to watch their channels - not counting the cost of cable. Even 6 Flags amusement parks have gone the subscription route.

I saw an ad that the brothers have a new treasure hunting show this season.

My father always read "True" and "Argosy" magazines. I read that article about Oak Island, probably in the early 1960s! I'm sure it was in one of those magazines.
I read the article in the 60's as a kid in readers digest, the same article that the two brothers read.
I don't know the veracity of it, but there have been several articles in our local newspaper, over the past few years, about the lost Civil War Gold Shipment hat was lost somewhere around central Pennsylvania. A father and son team thought they had bnarrowed the area when the Federal Government came in, cordoned off the area and kept the father and son out. All of a sudden the government pulled up stakes and still will not let anyone in. The father and son have been pressuring the government for reports and videos about it because they feel they should get a finders fee.
According to estimates the amount of gold supposedly found(?) is in the area of half a million pounds or more. Even 10% would be a very nice chunk of money.

Was this on Federal land?
What they find is either staged, or artifacts left over from previous speculators.

I love this show. In case you haven't heard about it, it's on the Discovery(?) channel, and it shows the efforts to discover buried treasure on a Canadian island near Nova Scotia. I first read about this in a magazine article about fifty years ago. People have been looking for treasure there for over two hundred years.
Currently, two brothers from Michigan(?) are leading the search. I'm sure they'll never find any actual treasure, but it's interesting to watch. In almost every show, they find something - a shoe from an ox, old jewelry, old wood, etc. I'm surprised they have been able to drag the show for nine years. I'm sure everyone is making money from the show, and they will continue as long as the money keeps flowing in.
The island definitely has a long and varied history, and I find it interesting as they explore and find more artifacts. What prompted this post is an email I received promoting all the "merch" they are selling related to the show. I can easily resist that. By the way, if you're in the Nova Scotia area, you can take a paid tour of the island.

About a half century ago there was a minor similar fad.
Looking for Billy the Kid's treasure.
Looking for Nazi gold.
Where is Bonnie and Clyde's stash?
Memoirs of people that knew them: Broke bozos.
Steal money. Goto town. Wine, women and song. Wake up.
Broke bozos. Do it again until caught.
I knew some folk go broke looking thru Superstition Mountains.
Not one metal detector, tho some found bones.
I watched it for several seasons, and it went nowhere. It's still going nowhere and is a totally boring show.
I've watched every episode and I read the same Reader's Digest article that they did when they did. I believe that they are honestly pursuing trying to find the treasure. The history they are uncovering is a pleasant addition which makes the show really interesting. Would be boring watching them dig a hole for 7 years. I also suspect that they are able to afford the equipment they use, not just construction but scientific and misc support equipment thru the TV revenues they produce via this show. Even if they don't find a treasure, they have uncovered a huge amount of information about the area that was previously unknown including earlier dates for explorers in the area than previously thought. As far as a treasury discovery being on TV, they are probably under contract to disclose this type of information only via their show. I'm sure that the lawyers at The History Channel are smart enough to know that this is the MacGuffin (Alfred Hithcock) that can hold an audience for 7+ years and protect it vigorously.
Watched several seasons. Believe show is on summer break. Has new shows started to air recently?

Just a scam , i prefer digging for gold in Alaska , or ice road truckers [ on that , the best was when they went to India ]

The one-hour show runs for maybe half an hour. I always mean to time it - maybe when it starts up again. They do a lot of re-hashing, and that kills time. I watch recordings, so I can fast-forward. It doesn't take long to watch an episode.
