Started my 14th year of retirement January 1st this year. At first still woke up early. Took about a year to sleep late but it’s true that the time flies don’t know how I had time to do so much when I was working. Now it doesn’t seem like there’s enough time in a day to do what I want. Still retirement is great.

Retired when I was 47...never looked back...never missed having to get up early.

I still do...even earlier now...but it's my choice...for my reasons.

Retired in 2011 from a 9-5 job after 42 years and soon after, begin a second career photographing quarter horse racing and related events for a magazine. Work with some great folks, travel as much as I want, use the latest and greatest Nikon gear. I'm having the time of my life!

I retired early 11 years ago after being an RN for 30 years. I thought I would miss working but not at all. The paperwork required just about buried me. I inactivated my license never to work in the health care field again. My life has turned to dogs, biking, gardening and photography. It's a good life. One that I would not want interrupted by work.

The previous posts have said it all. I maybe guilty of confirmation bias, but I think not.

After a forty five year career in the film industry, with long hours and long commutes, I retired early with a full pension when I hit 63 to help my wife rear our two toddler grandsons. Started a small, mostly real estate photography business that supplemented our income. After about a decade or so, Covid 19 pretty much ended that. But about mid-way through the pandemic and right after vaccines became available, I took a job producing and editing commercials for a marketing agency minutes from my home. I'm the oldest employee at the firm and it is a forty hour a week job. But the salary and benefits of the job are terrific and my commute is seven minutes. I really am not someone for whom sitting home on the porch works. This is way more fun and now that the boys are in college, my wife really doesn't need me around so much any more. It's a win-win.

A couple of years ago, just after retiring, I posted how weird it felt to not jump out of bed in the mornings and not have anywhere to go. Some answered they needed an adjustment period while others said they loved the freedom from work and never looked back. Well, after two years and four months, things look very different. I no longer feel "lost", but now wonder how I ever held down full-time and part-time jobs and ever had time to do anything else! I keep busy all the time. I kept the part-time job and have now worked at Sam's Club for over 27 years. I continue to build my 401K and between it and purchasing Walmart stock only keep about 1/3 of my pay. This is enough to pay my GAS bills (not the utility kind). I have a perfect schedule - 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mon. to Wed. This means not having to hop out of bed at the break of the day and even on the shortest days of the year, still get some sunshine when leaving work! Also, I get a four-day weekend every week. Time passes so fast though. When I finish work on Wed., it's hard to believe my work week is already over. Likewise, at the end of my four-day weekend, it seems the weekend is over too fast!

I agree, don't know how I had the time to do what I did. Worked 50-60 hour week, we built (mostly our work) a house and I went to school at night and finished with a 3.8. Been retired for more than 15 years and there isn't enough hours in the day.

Hah! Took me all of three seconds to adjust to being retired. Ten or whatever years ago.

Probably because it seems I was 'born' to be retired. Or maybe I'm just naturally lazy.

Gotta go now: got stuff to get done.................

I'm a 91 yo retired college prof (Big 10), been retired since the late '80 so for around 35 years. As you probably know, teaching college is not a particularly difficul or dangerous job, however in my younger days, I worked as a full time millwrights helper at Republic Steel Corp. in Ytown OH and believe me, there is no comprison. In any case, I hit the ground running at retirement and never looked back. I have three major hobbies: bird dog field trials (for over 50 years, competing and judging), competing in spaniel field trials (for over 10 years) and photography, again for over 50 years As you can see, I had two of them at retirement and have followed them both diligently. :-) Harry

Retirement for me was a change in life. My career was multi-faceted and each day presented new challenges. I spent the last 35 years analyzing and solving problems with existing mechanical systems and designing new ones with the pleasure of seeing them built and installed. 80+ percent of our employees had been there as long or longer than I so they became my extended family and we shared our trials and tribulations with each other.

Then, in just one day, it was all over. It took a while to find something to occupy my mind and body which led me to keep a camera at hand and to see the world around me in ways that I had not seen before.

Retirement is a state of mind. I've retired 5 times, the first in 1996, and finally for the last time a few years ago. It's OK to just be retired......
