Retirement two years on -- an update

A couple of years ago, just after retiring, I posted how weird it felt to not jump out of bed in the mornings and not have anywhere to go. Some answered they needed an adjustment period while others said they loved the freedom from work and never looked back. Well, after two years and four months, things look very different. I no longer feel "lost", but now wonder how I ever held down full-time and part-time jobs and ever had time to do anything else! I keep busy all the time. I kept the part-time job and have now worked at Sam's Club for over 27 years. I continue to build my 401K and between it and purchasing Walmart stock only keep about 1/3 of my pay. This is enough to pay my GAS bills (not the utility kind). I have a perfect schedule - 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mon. to Wed. This means not having to hop out of bed at the break of the day and even on the shortest days of the year, still get some sunshine when leaving work! Also, I get a four-day weekend every week. Time passes so fast though. When I finish work on Wed., it's hard to believe my work week is already over. Likewise, at the end of my four-day weekend, it seems the weekend is over too fast!

Hah! Took me all of three seconds to adjust to being retired. Ten or whatever years ago.

Probably because it seems I was 'born' to be retired. Or maybe I'm just naturally lazy.

Gotta go now: got stuff to get done.................

I'm also pushing ten years retired and have many of the same feelings. I've always been very good at doing nothing and am honing my craft. I too cannot understand how it was possible for me to go to a job for fifty or more hours a week for over fifty years and still have some semblance of a life outside of that time. I'm studying alternate philosophies and have chosen the Native American tradition of the spirit animal... my only problem is that I can't decide between the three-toed sloth or the slug. Thank goodness for photography which does get me motivated pretty regularly. Enjoy! 😎

I retired at the end of 2000 and at 55 years of age thought I should get a part time job so applied at UPS. During the interview I was told how hard the job could be and was told if I didn't need the money or insurance I probably shouldn't even consider it. So after the horror stories told to me by the interviewer I told him to disregard my application. I never applied anyplace else. Having a four old daughter I was a stay at home dad which was great. I was always there for her and chaperoned all of her field trips when I was needed. Even after my divorce when my daughter was ten years old she continued living with me. So I was blessed to have been such a huge part of her life when she was young. As far as staying busy with something always to do that's not me. During the Summer months with the heat and humidity my recliner and I are best friends. I was unusually busy this morning though, I had to turn over four calendars from July to August.

I'm a 91 yo retired college prof (Big 10), been retired since the late '80 so for around 35 years. As you probably know, teaching college is not a particularly difficul or dangerous job, however in my younger days, I worked as a full time millwrights helper at Republic Steel Corp. in Ytown OH and believe me, there is no comprison. In any case, I hit the ground running at retirement and never looked back. I have three major hobbies: bird dog field trials (for over 50 years, competing and judging), competing in spaniel field trials (for over 10 years) and photography, again for over 50 years As you can see, I had two of them at retirement and have followed them both diligently. :-) Harry

A couple of years ago, just after retiring, I post... (show quote)

After a 55 year career in heavy duty mechanics, I retired in 2009, & my body threw a party. Over those years, the odd fall or accident left me a legacy of pain as the trim, taut & terrific body, softened into a bunch of bones that I never knew were busted.
The lifestyle of photography & computers, & much sedentary action, has done me no favours. Now pushing 78, I feel that’s my lot in life, but it’s been satisfying to look back on it, through the many pics I’ve taken over those years.

Three years ago today, as a matter of fact. I do some work for my town (elections, land use…and I’m not the guy you show your ID to), sailing, photography, general tinkering, and occasional travel.

They asked me to come back to do contract work, and I stated a requirement they wouldn’t meet. Ok.

I have loved being retired from day one. Having dealt with "the public" for my entire working life I am now glad to just be "one of the public".

When I retired from teaching after summer school eighteen years ago, I was told by many that when school began in the fall I would miss it. Apparently if that advice were to be true, school hasn’t begun yet.

I’ve been retired for eight years and never looked back. I still do income tax returns during tax season ( my own business), and that occupies the winter. I love the freedom and the ability to make my own schedule.

After retiring, it was all about me. I play golf, I ride my bicycle, I play pickleball, I going fishing, and play with my camera. My sales manager took me out to lunch and asked me if I would like to come back to work. I told him, sorry I don't have any free time. I paid my dues. Now it's my time. Life is Good.
