Samantha, I checked the weather forecast for your area and it's a doozy! Today will be like a steam bath with 57% humidity. with a high of 112 deg.F. If there is any good news for you, the humidity will drop to the mid to lower 30's as the week goes on.

There's a saying that goes, "It's not the heat...it's the humidity" which is a partial truth. It should be, it's not the temperature...it's the humidity for the humidity in the air constitutes the total heat in the air and it is the total heat that our bodies have to contend with because the heat goes from the greater to the lesser so when there is more heat in the surrounding air than that of our bodies, we gain heat instead of losing it to the atmosphere which is our means of cooling. Be very careful out there. Heat stress is a real killer.

I'm less concerned with fossil fuel use and more with the covering of every available square foot of ground with concrete , asphalt or new buildings. I'm not a tree hugger but even I see the change in the atmosphere.

Taller windows that could be opened at both top and bottom helped out around here.

Yup...my sun room is 900 square feet...had tall windows installed as soon as I moved in.

It works...but not nearly as well as floorboard vents in those cracker houses.

Concrete patio is a lot less maintenance for an old guy than a lawn, and no lawn mower burning gas either.

I use to visit Cloudcroft every summer. Wish I was there now.

8000 feet sounds great. We drove through the southern route to get to San Diego, though, and temps in Arizona, New Mexico and western California were 108. HOT!! Thank goodness we only get these temps in DFW for a few days a year. When I was younger I'd golf in it. Not any more. When I was even younger, 97 was the perfect temp to get a good bike ride.

Been consistently in the 90's in NJ, which is a long way from your temps. The hottest place I've ever been was Arizona where the temps ranged between 113-116. It felt like walking into a blast furnace.

Never going back.

There are some surprises DC is a Southern city but not as far South as St Pete.
When I looked a few years ago, DC needed more AC per year than St Pete!

Think I'll hit the pool this evening even if the water warms up. I hope the suspect Texas electrical grid holds up.

My Dad stayed in the service 1 1/2 years after WWII ended. Both he and my Mom enjoyed it. Being stationed at Sheppard Field in the summer was one of the factors that helped him decide to get out. It got up to 113 on the field.

I lived at White Sands Missile Range, NM in 59' for 7 months. I was married in Aug, and then lived in El Paso and commuted to the Range daily. Talk about heat!!! On the way back from NJ, after our marriage, we spent a weekend in Dallas. Heat galore. Of course in El Paso and the Missile Range it was 'dry'! But at 105 - 120 degrees in the summer, the heat was unbelievable!

Sorry Samantha! Hang in there!

Sam,
Do you have a raft large enough to hold you up and float around? I would spend the night in the pool. Whew!

From your neighbor on the other side of the Metroplex...Dallas that is...got up early this morning to mow the lawn at 7:00 AM when it was a balmy 88°. Avoided an afternoon mow when it goes to 108°.

In 1980 we had 67 days of 100 degree weather with a stretch of days hitting 111-112. I was in grad school and cleaning swimming pools that summer. In that heat. My wife told me it was the best I ever looked. Ofc, the A/C went out in the house that summer, too. We'd leave the door open but had a screen door. I'd come home, sit on the sofa in just my athletic shorts and put a box fan right in front of me to cool off. Flies would get in through the screen door as we went in and out. It was so hot they wouldn't light. The flew around our rectangular living/dining room area. It really was like watching the fly races. But, it cooled off and we survived. How we ever slept I can't tell you, but we did.
