I will be shooting my grandson's water polo match next Thursday. it's strictly for fun so no real pressure. I shoot APSC Fuji. I'm thinking 70-300 lens (certainly open to suggestions), not sure about shutter speed, polarizer, exposure compensation (outdoor pool in San Jose, CA). I'll probably be shooting in shutter priority so aperature will be camera set. I also usually shoot with auto ISO. Any suggestions are welcome, especially if I totally missed something. Thanks in advance for everyone's advice. I've shot baseball with no problems, but first time for water polo.

If outside on a sunny day use the 'Sunny 16' rule as a base.

As a start try 1/1600s, f/4, ISO100. Try to use wider apertures to isolate your subjects against the background. I would suggest for action you set aperture and speed manually and use Auto ISO if you are going to be shooting at differing angles to the light.

As for exposure 'compensation' this is going to vary depending on whether the subjects are front or back lit. You may find your metering does well enough not to have to bother about this.

I took great images with a Sony APS-C camera and a 70-300mm lens at my grandson's water polo tournament. The focal range was perfect. You might bring a polarizing filtered

I've tried shooting my Granddaughter, now a member of the University of Washington water polo team.

Photographic success is hard. The meets have all been indoors where the light is terrible. You can't stand near the pool to shoot! My best shots have been "head and shoulders" compositions when a player is shooting or passing. To do that you need a long lens, wide open with a fast shutter speed. You have to live with high ISO and noise.

I use a Panasonic Lumix GX8 M43 with their Leica 100-400. It is relatively light and compact so I can hand hold from the stands.

ISO 6400, 320th at f/5.0, 350mm (equivalent).

Her education goal is law school!
