Cameras are tools. Lenses are tools. What type of pictures do you want to take? Need to get the right tools for the job. No tool can do everything.

I am thinking of buying myself a DSLR camera as I have more time to learn how to use one and more importantly to spend more time creating better photographs. I am currently using a Panasonic Lumix TZ60. I don't want anything too complicated as me and technology don't gel!! I don't want anything too heavy. It will be my first DSLR so I want to try and get it right first time as it is a big chunk of money for me to part with. It doesn't need to be a new camera as I have been told that you can get an older model just as good for less money. My budget is up to £500 but would prefer to spend less and have some left over for accessories!! Trusty advice would be greatly appreciated.

The OP is wanting to ease into a DSLR from a Lumix point-an-shoot. Why is every one giving her advice on professional and semi-professional cameras. She can do everything she needs to do over the next few years with a Canon SL1 or SL2. She is concerned not only about price but weight and complexity.

Dunno, some were good suggestions and some don’t read the requirements ….or dates.
The original post is from over 4 years ago, so the OP probably has probably decided already and moved on.

I love my Olympus OMD e Mark 5 II. It’s a micro 4/3s with excellent internal stabilization. It’s size and weight let me take it anywhere and I think the image quality is excellent. There are also a lot of lenses that go with it for when you develop GAS.

I second this suggestion. I have two EM5ii cameras, one of them modified to IR capability.

Many lenses to choose from. But there are low cost starter lenses such as the 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 and the 40-150mm f4-56. They actually take great pictures for being starter lenses. I have both of them. And I have some of the higher end too. I still use the low end ones a lot since they are smaller and lighter.

It is so easy to not look at the original post date! I have jumped in with both feet a few times.

Beyond noting the June 2018 Zombie date, one can click the user's name / URL and see the OP last participated on the site in Dec 2020.

Many of us didn't realize the OP's original post is 4 years old. Perhaps the system should be modified to not accept additional comments to any post older than a year.

Perhaps people shouldn't go back and drag up these old posts. It's understandable that people don't realize it's an old thread after it's been dragged up. But why drag them up in the first place?
