I am thinking of buying myself a DSLR camera as I have more time to learn how to use one and more importantly to spend more time creating better photographs. I am currently using a Panasonic Lumix TZ60. I don't want anything too complicated as me and technology don't gel!! I don't want anything too heavy. It will be my first DSLR so I want to try and get it right first time as it is a big chunk of money for me to part with. It doesn't need to be a new camera as I have been told that you can get an older model just as good for less money. My budget is up to £500 but would prefer to spend less and have some left over for accessories!! Trusty advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you want "good," it's going to be big and heavy and complicated compared with your Lumix, but that's life. Millions of people use these cameras, and they adapt. You can, too. The first thing to do is to decide on the maximum price. Then choose a brand and model. Take your time deciding and get better than you think you need. Put it in Auto and start shooting. Gradually start playing with the settings and learning how to make changes. I like my Nikon D750.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

Entry-Level D.S.L.R.: Cameras

These small cameras contain a APS-C sized sensors, sometimes known as "D.X.” sensors.
Entry-Level D.S.L.R.: Cameras come with a small pop up flash.
Continuous release is also a built-in feature.
Priced as very reasonable $$$.
These are comprised of plastic bodies; that are, meant for light use.
They produce very nice general, all around pleasing images.
Mostly operated by; full on automatic exposure mode.
Entry-Level D.S.L.R.: Cameras even will record video.
With many easy to use pre-programmed modes.
Containing a few professional features for those who want to
explore the craft a bit.
Entry-Level D.S.L.R.: Cameras are much more convenient to use than the point and shoot models.
Being a, D.S.L.R., you can properly and easily hold them for a pleasing image making experience.
They usually come in a kit form with two lenses included.
These are highly suited for a budding child photographer.
As a starter camera, that may be showing an interest in photography.
Or possibly someone who just wants to be able to make very nice
images with ease.

NOTE:
As I stated these are starter cameras, or snapshot style devices.
Entry-Level D.S.L.R.: Cameras are limited in many ways, designed for easy image making operations.
Though very capable of good images; they are not able to produce the level of images, nor do some of the more popular, and advanced
image-making procedures you may want to undertake.
I bought my wife one of these, Compact D.S.L.R. Cameras; she greatly enjoys using hers.
She can set it on continuous release and gains great joy in photographing low flying shore bird's with me.
She is the kind of a photographer that wants to just have fun and not get to heavily involved with technical aspects.
Moreover, that is ok for someone like her...
Once you arrive at this point in your journey, it may be time for you to upgrade, to a more advanced and capable, D.S.LR...
As you go along in learning more about this lifestyle, you may desire to do more with the camera.
You may be interested in expanding your horizons a bit more.
I would recommend, if you come to a place; and the need should arise; for further purchases of other lenses, for this stage and model of camera, to consider graduating up to a Semi- Professional D.S.LR model
instead.
You will be glad you did so...
If that happens in your relationship with this current version of D.S.L.R., camera and it may happen...
You may feel frustrated and the need for a camera that can
a fort you the room to grow in you desire.
One may want to; really get into things, without restraint or limitations.
I highly recommend you consider purchasing a:

Semi- Professional D.S.L.R.…

Previously, in the past if you have been an, F.S.L.R.
(Single Lens Reflex) film cameraperson and you have always got along with them well.
I think you would be very happy to move right into the...
Semi- Professional D.S.L.R. camera style; as I have with great
satisfaction.

Containing APS-C/ D.X. sensors or full frame 35mm equivalent sized sensors.
Both size sensors are very nice; as of late the full frame sensors have came down in price, and are now very popular additions, to this ever growing, camera style.

Both sensor sizes have their own unique features and advantages.
Moreover, the price differences of their lenses are a consideration as well.
Do your homework and get the one you feel most comfortable with owning and using.

One other consideration one must be aware of is the size of your
computer's capabilities, and your hard drive capacity.
Once you graduate to this level of camera, image-enhancing software, such as “Lightroom” and “Photoshop”, may become a natural part of your growing new adventure.
This just goes with the territory...

Pricing around, $$$$ and up of these can be considerably higher
depending on where you start with them in your journey.
Many of the same features that come with the Full Frame cameras are
included in these models.
Semi- Professional D.S.L.R. cameras are also available in a very nice and economical kit form with two Kit Style Lenses.
This Kit form of purchase does very well for you to begin with.
The lenses are quite good in quality, so do not think you are getting
sub-standard glass here at all.
Later as you may expand yourself in the craft, you may want to purchase additional up graded in quality lenses for your camera body.
Alternatively, if you are coming from an advanced film camera
background, you may want to purchase a separate camera body and lens combination to suit your needs.

I personally found purchasing a separate camera model body, and an
upper level in quality zoom lens ,worked quite well for my own first time purchaser needs.

As you can see this advanced style/model offers you the largest set of options possible.
With an endless amount; of room to grow in, and photography
experiences to explore.

They are comprised of whether sealed bodies made of magnesium alloy.
Containing highly sophisticated internal menu systems with of course, the many easy to use pre-programmed modes.
In addition to the very sophisticated Aperture, Shutter, Manual, and
Professional modes of image capture.

Additionally this Semi- Professional D.S.L.R will contain a set of very extensive menus for the cameras operations plus, special settings, availed for any image making circumstance.

A small and limited pop-up flash is included along with the ability to use ; advanced external lighting sorceress.

With lightning, speed able to capture up to four or more frames per
second of continuous image capture.

The capture of very high quality video is also included.
These Semi- Professional D.S.L.R. cameras are; usually used as backup camera equipment for those using the Professional Full Frame
Camera.

Full Frame: Professional: Cameras…

These come containing only Full Frame or 35mm sized sensors.
Full Frame: Professional cameras are capable of producing the highest levels of images possible, at the current time of their,
manufacture release.

They are very expensive, and able to be, subjected to the harshest of
conditions.

Once again these remarkable cameras come, containing highly
sophisticated internal menu systems.

These cameras are capable of capturing images at six frames per second and up.

In addition to the very advanced Aperture, Shutter, Manual, and
Professional modes of image capture.

No pop up flash is included; the ability to use external lighting systems is of course available.

1080 P video plus 4- K VIDEO IS STANDARD…

The pricing of these remarkable camera bodies are from $6495.00 and up depending upon your lens choice and needs.

Once again, I must remind you of the need for a computer that can
handle the eminence information this cameras image information holds.

If you are interested in learning all that is to be possibly experienced in this lifestyle of being a photographer.
Do not limit yourself on your camera’s capacity.
Later wishing that your camera category choice could affront to you what you may desire to do with it.
That is why the Semi- Professional D.S.L.R. and the
Full frame: Professional models are so highly sot
after by those who want not to be limited; now and in the future as far as their current journey of present.

Technology changes and improves with each new camera model phase.
You do not necessarily have to have the very latest one.
Just get a camera you can grow with and not be limited in your future education, and endeavors’ and enjoyment with it.
In whatever stage of photography development you are in now.
Real art and image capture can be gained; with any camera.

Even a Pin- Hole camera; once it is the hands of the skilled
photographer, and coupled ,with the trained eye makes the simplest of device use look easy.

If all anybody had to do was to look, true a hole and press a button…
We all would be famous and wealthy.
The joy is in the journey and not the final destinations.

For a budget of £500 you could do worse than a used Sony Alpha of some sort say £250 these can use Minolta AF lenses which are in the main relatively cheap and of good quality second hand a couple of zooms would set you back say £200 leaving £50 for ancillaries. Reviews of these lenses (warts and all) are on a website called "Dyxum".

I love my Olympus OMD e Mark 5 II. It’s a micro 4/3s with excellent internal stabilization. It’s size and weight let me take it anywhere and I think the image quality is excellent. There are also a lot of lenses that go with it for when you develop GAS.

MIFSUDS has built a decent reputation selling 2nd hand equipment. Worth visiting their website, they're based in Brixham, Devon so a bit of a slog from North Wales - but plenty to look at on the way down and shoot on the way back should you purchase.

http://www.mifsuds.com/

For example - Used CANON 700D with 3000 acutations for £300.00. Nikon and other manufacturers available too.

Just as an example if you like Nikon and like the d3200 I would jump, over to the d7100 . It cost more but you will out grow the entry level cameras very quickly.

Among others, I have 4 Sony DSLR's, bought used, mostly E-bay & Pawn Shops, and a trunk full of Sony/Minolta glass that I have all kinds of fun with - and have not spent a lot on them. I have approx. $400.00 USD in those 4 cameras (yes I'm a pretty good bargain shopper) Two Sony A300's, an A37, and an A58 (all work very well) The trunk full of lens...probably closer to $600.00 USD, mostly due to long tele purchases, as I had to spend a little more to avoid the "stinkers & clinkers". I've started on a Nikon quest to do the same, over time, and that should be fun too.

Modern DSLR cameras - They have a lot of bells and whistles, but they all have a setting called "auto", which is a great place to start while learning what all the other settings are used for. You can do the same with any brand, I did Sony because I still had my Minolta film gear when I started into Digital DSLRs, and have not a single regret. Have built a room full of gear with prudent shopping. You are going to get lots of wonderful advice on this forum...take it all in and apply what you desire.

Don't fear the technology.....let it work for you while you learn all the other stuff. Learning is really good for us!!! Helps keep you young! AND, you don't have to spend a fortune to be "camera rich", just figure out what you are looking for, and do some patient prudent shopping.....

Cheers! and have fun.

Do you have a second hand camera shop you can go to? A good one should have knowledgeable staff who can go through some options with you.

Have you looked into mirrorless, they offer many advantages over DSLRs.

I do not know about the prices of cameras and lenses in the UK but I am in full agreement that a second hand camera could be a great value. A refurb camera is also a great value compared to a new one.
I do not know about your expertise in photography. You could be very happy with an entry level camera and they are usually light and pretty small compared with amateurs and professional models.
If there is a photo store nearby and it is a reputable store I am sure they have well trained and competent salesmen that could help you with your selection. If you have not learned the basics in photography this is the time to do so. To buy a camera and leave it all up to it is like making a good camera into a sophisticated point and shoot. Learn the camera and it will do exactly what you want from your photography.
The bad news is that you need to learn how to edit those files. A local camera club will be most helpful.
