George for the life of me I can’t comprehend why you addressed your post to me. My post said I never had a problem. Love hearing from you but I am also retired LEO and corrections as well.

Have a great day.

Not a problem at all. I was just wondering why. Pleasure hearing from you. I have done similar and will again.

How many of you fellow traveling photographers; have experienced heavy screens; by the T.S.A. when traveling with your carry on camera bag?

This seems to be the norm for me..
Either coming or returning home...
At least once a trip this seems to happen...

I understand that the black bag could raise some suspicion...

All lenses are layed down as to not make the X-Ray scann bring suspension...
There's nothing sharp or unusual in the bag...

Although once I did have a small knife that I forgot was in there and they missed that all together...

But I have experienced a shake down even after my bag was X-Ray ed...
It is almost like I can count on this happening at least once every time I travel...

Just wanted to know if I was just unlucky... I really don't have anything to hide from them...
I even scored a "full security" .... "random test check" with a palm swab...
That was very unnerving...

I must have been the thousandth passenger... Lucky me...
I will never forget the looks from my wife and the other folks nearby...
How many of you fellow traveling photographers; h... (show quote)

Nison ...

First, let me say with, TSA and the fact that you're traveling on airplanes, be warned to expect absolutely anything and everything.

As retired law enforcement of 30-plus years, in retirement my wife and I traveled extensively and during the last seven years, we traveled in excess of 100,000 miles. Yes, I have a large carry-on with 1 or 2 cameras.. and either 3 or 4 lenses... We both have TSA PreCheck and we both have Global Entry but, that doesn't mean a rat's patootie to TSA agents.

As retired law enforcement, I am always courteous, friendly, and I always keep my mouth shut when I go through TSA and just watch and observe their typical, police type, I don't give a damn attitude Behavior..... trust me they have unbelievable power...

They're humans, they have Federal power, and they can absolutely make your life miserable -- no matter what and the bottom line is you have absolutely no recourse.

Even if you complain, their supervisors will always justify the behavior of who and what they did.

My wife has a pacemaker. I have actually seen female TSA agents fondle her body in excess of five minutes and actually watched TSA female agents go over certain parts of her body at least five and six times in a single examination.

Stay calm, be polite, don't offer any excessive explanation and just relax. If you have nothing to worry about it will all work out in the end

Yes, I always make it a point to get at an airport at least 3 hours early and I always make sure that I have at least three hours in between flights during layovers for any such typical problem....

The above's are my personal experiences. Others may have different opinions and that's okay. I'll leave it at that just be kind, and be courteous and be patient...

Cheers
George Veazey

Sometimes, but not every time. When they are finished I always say “Thank you for being thorough.”

I had never taken my lens off my new D750 when I went to my nephew's wedding in Oregon. When we were boarding to return to Rochester, the TSA said they had to check my camera, so, took it to a back room while I went through the machines. Later, I took photos of Mt. Hood as the plane left the area. When I looked at the photos of Mt. Hood back home, there were specks and globs in the sky all around it, but no such artifacts in the photos I had done of the wedding and scenery before that. I realized the TSA must have coughed or sneezed onto my sensor when they took the lens off! (Thanks, TSA!!)

Just flew to Canada and back with one carryon packed with gear plus another body and lens in my “personal bag.” No trouble at all with security. On this trip, they seemed more concerned about the CPAPs we were carrying than the electronics.

Normal. I have "Global Entry" status that lets me take the short line and use a cane (73 yrs old), Limp, bald, No apparent threat. Still I'm stopped, checked, either coming or going, sometimes both.

I just flew to and from Florida with no scrutiny of my camera bag. I also brought back powdered baby formula in my checked bag, and I don't think they were concerned about that white powder either lol.

No issues and I travel a lot but internationally I typically take out the camera body and any larger lenses. The glass often shows as solid black on the X-ray which is why you may get a secondary inspection. In the US if you have TSA Pre it just goes through in the bag.

Same here, i once made four flight security check in the same 24 hours periode and on the fifth one they’ve found my multi tool knife in the bottom of the bag, i tough I’d lost it, ever since I’m subject to more scrutiny.

I went through security one time carrying my photo suitcase & also my Nikon 400mm in its hard case. They took each item out of the suitcase and ran them through, each camera & lens in a separate tray. The 400mm was taken out of the case & placed on the conveyor belt & fed through as was the hard case. I would much rather have astute personnel go through my things than wave me through. Having lived in the UK when the Pan-Am flight went down, I personally saw the carnage 4 days later which is burned into my memory. If I haven't done anything wrong, I have nothing to fear or hide....Swab away.

I can only remember once where it was more than a scan. The agent asked me to demo the body. I mentioned there wasn't a battery installed and did he want a lens attached. And he said never mind..... "nice stuff."

You just answered your own question. Almost 6 years ago when returning from Italy my wife inadvertently left 1 apple in her back pack. Now when we go through security or customs I present my ID and am told to have a good trip. My wife has her passport held until they search all she has with her!

When we asked why: she is "in the system. You tried to bring an apple in once!"

Go figure what they do when they find a knife!

My bag doesn’t get checked often. Maybe once in 10 trips. I frequently carry camera and lenses in a backpack rolled up in clothes also have charging cables and other stuff but it’s never been any problem. I tend to think the other way that my bag should be checked more often.
