I just went to the TSA-PRE check at JFK this morning because I came in on an international flight. I was told to keep everything in my bag. I had a laptop, two Sony full-frame bodies, two large zoom lenses, three small primes. No problems. However, this does not match my experience at other airports. I think that local practices vary and that TSA is experimenting with different models.

Your eligibility for scrutiny of your person and for your belongings involves your personal profile as well.

ln my travels, I've found that buying my flight ticket online several days ahead of my flight may smooth the way -- probably because the security agencies then have more time to examine your situation.

I reminder the period after the Muslim terrorists flew airliners into office buildings back east. Men in black patrolled the interior of flight terminals along with an attack dog and a sub-machine gun while closely eyeing everybody.

How many of you fellow traveling photographers; have experienced heavy screens; by the T.S.A. when traveling with your carry on camera bag?

This seems to be the norm for me..
Either coming or returning home...
At least once a trip this seems to happen...

I understand that the black bag could raise some suspicion...

All lenses are layed down as to not make the X-Ray scann bring suspension...
There's nothing sharp or unusual in the bag...

Although once I did have a small knife that I forgot was in there and they missed that all together...

But I have experienced a shake down even after my bag was X-Ray ed...
It is almost like I can count on this happening at least once every time I travel...

Just wanted to know if I was just unlucky... I really don't have anything to hide from them...
I even scored a "full security" .... "random test check" with a palm swab...
That was very unnerving...

I must have been the thousandth passenger... Lucky me...
I will never forget the looks from my wife and the other folks nearby...
How many of you fellow traveling photographers; h... (show quote)

When I lived in NY my camera back pack was always inspected piece by piece on the way home. I asked one of the inspectors why I was never bothered on the way out, but always on the way home. He said it was more likely that someone would be bringing a bomb into NY than into Alaska. Good point?
