You are welcome and I meant it. They are very nice and of a quality not often seen on the internet these days.

I'm sorry TOS means "Terms Of Service.

You mentioned you didn't like google having the rights to your images. I recommend you read the TOS for 500pix.

After seeing your images, I understand why you don't want to contribute to Google. Google Maps is not a high quality venue for displaying quality images. Cell phone snap shots are more appropriate for Google Maps.

I agree that most images posted to google maps leave a lot to be desired and some are so horrible I can't understand why they were even posted. But then there are many that are good. Many of the images I post are the same images I post here and I don't want my name associated with a really bad image. If I plan to visit a conservation area or wildlife refuge I like to check the photos for that area. For the area that I've posted over 200 images I hope those images are helping other photographers in making a decision to visit there or not. There are several wildlife photography hobbyists in the area I live but like most who have replied here don't post the pictures they take. There's no right or wrong but just a matter of whether you choose to or not and I was just curious.

I posted to google maps a mediocre image at best that has received over 700,000 views and I was puzzled for awhile as to why. That image and a few others I posted are images from an area that is very popular for equestrians with many miles of trails in the Shawnee National Forest that draws riders from several other states. When riders are contemplating coming to this area and they research it on the net my images are the first ones that pop up. So hopefully those images are helping others.

I do not give Google Maps my photos for its use because GM does not compensate me for contributing to its profit-making. I reject the business model of Google Maps in this respect. Somehow, GM has gotten around acknowledging copyright law and paying photographers for use of their work product..

The purpose of posting images to Google Maps is not to make money, but to help out other people who want to see what a location looks like. Doesn't need to be a meticulously edited image; a quick, simple snapshot will do. Of course if resentment towards Google is of greater importance to you than helping people, then don't post any images.

Maybe they treat it as "offered in donation". They didn't explicitly ask for images.

I think it more for people to see what is in that area they are viewing. Parks, trail, etc.

Yes, just within the past few months I posted several photos that I have for our church since I curate the church's website and noticed that there were few photos there already and none from inside during a church service. Google keeps telling me how many people have looked at my photos. I was surprised at how many people have looked at the photos of our small church in rural Virginia. --Richard

Same here. I attend a very small rural church and after posting pictures of it I was surprised how many views it got.

They also don't charge you to use their maps.

As for copyright, unless there is something that says otherwise, the person who posts the picture still owns the copyright.

You don't exactly post a lot of pictures here either. Maybe you just don't want folks to see your pictures. That's OK too.

That doesn't really bother me. Photography for me is a hobby. If any of my images would be helpful to anyone for any reason why should I care? How could that in any way negatively affect my life? If someone using one of my images doesn't negatively affect my life then life goes on as usual. We all have bigger worries than that.

Not every picture is a work of art, or a revenue stream. Sometimes you just like to donate to the community and everybody can benefit from it.
