Optical drives, like CD's, and soon DVD's are on the way to being obsolete. Very few modern computers have or use them. Software is delivered by network connections. I cannot remember the last time I "burned" and CD or DVD, I usually just copy to a USB drive until I transfer to my hard drive or the cloud.
In another 10 years, the DVD and DVD drives will be a relic, just like the floppy and floppy drive.
While I am a PC person look to what is happening in Apple. Their new computers have not had DVD drives for several years now and the newer ones have only USB or network ports and not much else. My wife's new Apple MacBook Air has only 2 USB-C ports. They are used for everything; external interface, network, power, etc.

I don't see that as progress. Without an optical drive, I can't listen to my CDs or burn CDs or DVDs. Apple's moves over the years have not been good. I think they're doing it to save money. My 2012 MBP has a bunch of ports, an SD slots, and an optical drive. My M1 has two USB-C ports. I had to buy and attach an adapter to connect things. Apple saved money; I spent money.
