Buying a New Desktop Computer?

When my Big Red computer got sick, I bought a Dell XPS8930 to use in the meantime. I never buy a computer with an optical drive, preferring to add my own at a much lower price. Unfortunately, this Dell cannot accept optical drives. I would have had to order one with a drive.

If you are planning to buy a desktop, be sure you can add an optical drive if you want to. Without an optical drive, I can't read or burn disks, putting a crimp in my style.

I like having a CD in the machine but I'm finding I use it less than a few years ago, more goes onto flash drives now.

I do also.
My tower has two DVD drives (old tower...), makes copying easier.
My wife's laptop, and probably most friends, does not have a DVD drive.
I bought a USB external.

If you have another PC with a working optical drive, you might be able to map it to your new Dell as another network drive. I've done that before with CDs and DVDs drives many times. Must set source drive (optical in this case) to allow sharing so target PC (Dell) can see it.

Me too... I bought an external CD/DVD drive for iMac back when.. Great accessory but Have not use it much lately. Maybe wife can as I plan on an iMac 24 for her birthday... Dell burning ceremony coming up ... Win.10 software will light the fire.

Up until I got this one, all my desktops had two drives. I'll have to use Big Red for copying, uploading, and burning.

I own a Dell All-In-One which doesn't come with an optical drive. However, I did find a pair of Dell external optical drives priced @ $30, which serve my needs.

I've had mixed results with external optical drives. I have one, so maybe I'll try it.

EDIT: Thanks for reminding me. I connected the drive, and iTunes it's importing a CD. It's a burner, too.

Can it take an optical drive connected via USB port?

My Dell doesn't have the chassis room to contain a CD drive in addition to the two drives already installed. It has a 256gb SSD, and a 1tb 7200rpm spinner. No other room for hardware. I "spoke" to a Dell help tech and he's the one who recommended the Dell plug-in CD's. They've worked perfectly, so far.

The "C" drive has only the OS and software installed. I use the "D" for all storage. I have a 2tb SSD which is going to replace the 1tb spinner very soon.

I recently bought an XPS8940 because it showed a CD port. Unfortunately, the CD/DVD was not installed. Several calls later the drive was ordered and easily installed. I purchase and rip CDs frequently, so the optical drive was a must.

Yes! I found my external drive, and I was able to import a CD. It can also burn disks, but I haven't tried that.

What I have to do is build a new house with a large computer room. Maybe I'll start a GoFundMe page.

Yes, and it works fine - a little Asus for under $30.

About 10 years ago I bought a MacBook Air. I think it was the 1st MBA. Didn’t have an optical drive so I bought an external so I could install MS Office. Works just fine. I can use it on a PC, too. Occasionally I have need to install some program. Now I also have an Acer laptop w/o an optical drive so the external OD came in handy.
