I had the first of two cataract surgeries yesterday and now notice that in the “new“ eye, colors seem brighter—not surprising—but also much cooler than in the other eye. The difference in color temp seems to be about 4000K or more between the two, obviously because the yellowish lens is now gone. Now I wonder if color photos I’ve processed recently look overcooked or color-shifted. Anyone else have similar experiences?

One of my memories of my Mother is that she strongly like the colors and lightness after her cataract operations years ago.

Wow, 3 surgeries!! Glad your end result is working out for you for the most part. Looking forward to my 1st surgery this summer.

I read an article where a rather wealthy old woman in her 80s had all the carpet in her house replaced with an off color white. She fought with the carpet company over color and she insisted the white she chose be installed, PRONTO! Then she had cataract surgery. She was appalled when the color she actually insisted be installed turned out to be a lovely shade of pink! LOL...So, yes, color perception is corrected after surgery. Also, my uncle is still sensitive to bright lights. He has me blow out the candle at restaurant tables because it distracts him.

I echo your finding. My age related cloudy lens eye blocks shorter wavelengths more so than my less affected eye. All the more reason to use reference color scales and/or photos of known balance when managing hues in post.

I had both eyes done, a week apart. The yellow was immediately apparent after the first eye. Just before the second eye was done, the yellow had faded. My brain had started to see the difference as normal. Not a lot of adjustment needed after the second eye was done.

My wife just had the 2nd eye done, 1st one weeks ago. She needed it a while back but kept taking care of me w/my medical issues. She has expressed amazement at the clear whites... absence of yellow tint.

My 1st eye was done quite a few years ago the the second in 2019. I had forgot the color shift. I am getting YAG on 2nd eye next week... a common fix for minor issues after eye surgery... just a quick zap w/laser

I have glaucoma. I use an eye drop every day. So worried that my eye sight is getting worse, & nothing I can do about it ☹

I had cataract surgery in 2019. I did not notice any change in colors, either temp or brighter. After talking to others I guess I am one of the oddballs. That's not unusual for me. :-)

The same here. I had both eyes done at the same time, But noticed no difference in seeing color. To be honest , I was a bit disappointed, as everyone I knew said the colors seemed brighter after the their surgery

I wonder if even well sighted people see colors equally. Without a doubt women see colors better than men. Anyone that has done automotive painting knows that to get a good color match, you better call for your wife, mom, sister or even hire a hooker to see if your new paint matches the existing paint color. My ex was bipolar and when manic, she said colors appeared brighter and more vibrant than normal. I suspect that like beauty, color is in the eye of the beholder.

I have the same condition, with some other complications. Losing one’s eyesight is a scary business.
Given that, there are much worse things. Try to be positive.

Had both of mine done with a gap of about three months. The lenses were for long sight …before I was short sighted and had to wear glasses all the time…now only for reading and camera adjustments. What was significant was the brightness ..at least 3 stops if not more. As to the colour temperature I could not see any difference.
Great improvement and recommended for anyone who is doubtful.

I looked at several of your most recent image posts and for the large part they appear fine. One of the "Chilean volcano" images looks a little too saturated, but even that's not all that bad (top image, color of the sky seems unrealistic to me). I'm viewing your images on a calibrated monitor and am using a color managed browser.

Some of what you are seeing may be "mental". It takes a while after your vision is changed in any way for your brain to adapt. For example there was an experiment done where people were given glasses to wear that turned their view of the world upside down! After a few days wearing those 24/7, their brains "flipped" the image right side up. After that happened they stopped wearing the glasses and once again the world appeared upside down for a few days until their brains re-adjusted. Probably the same thing happens with color.

Thanks for the analysis! Good to know things haven’t looked too bad lately. I’m looking forward to doing some Processing with both new lenses soon.

Some years ago my Dad had cataract surgery on both eyes (not at the same time). After it was done and fully healed he no longer needed glasses to drive, even at 90 years old! He still wore reading glasses at times, but didn't need them for anything that wasn't close. (P.S. My sister and I sort of felt he needed to stop driving for other reasons... but his vision wasn't one of them. He had some interesting driving techniques!)
I looked at several of your most recent image post... (show quote)

Thank you all for the helpful comments! I really appreciate it. It’s reassuring to hear all the similar stories. I might check back in with an update after the second eye is done next week.
