Ukraine has long been the breadbasket of Europe, going back to ancient Greece.
Russia has always coveted ownership of Ukraine. For grain and for a warm water seaport.
After several failed attempts, Catherine the Great was the first Russian ruler to successfully invade Ukraine (Crimea), in 1783.
Russia has considered Ukraine to be its rightful territory ever since.
Putin is merely taking back Russia's property.

Really ?
Ukrainian people asked Russian tsar Alexis to be their ruler in 1654. Crimea always was a part of Ottoman Empire. In XVIII century Russian Empire captured and annexed Crimea. Then it was a part of Russian Federation. In 1954 Khrushchev transferred Crimea to Ukrainian SSR.

So are you suggesting that our military should be over there fighting in the Ukraine? Just what are you suggesting?

I stand corrected.
Russia was protectorate over eastern Ukraine by 1654 and slowly began annexation by 1689.
Catherine the Great conquered western Ukraine and Crimea in 1783.

I like the Ukrainians but it is still Europe's problem. Not the US's responsibility to solve.

Western Ukraine is far from Crimea. Part of Western Ukraine was annexed by Russian Empire after the several partitions of Rzeczpospolita (Poland and Lithuania) between Prussia, Austria, and Russia in 1793-1795.
You are right. Catherine II did conquer not only Crimea, but some territory near Black and Azov seas.
