I think it means NATO, but that’s very contentious.

Sounds like it would be important to offer them membership into NATO
Ukraine is not a member nation, and I doubt that any "instantaneous" membership in NATO would be of much use, vis-a-vis Russia.
I have serious doubts about how NATO would react. NATO requires that member nations be threatened, and if one is threatened, all are threatened. Right now, member nations are enjoying a measure of economic prosperity, and are coming out from under the COVID pandemic. Would they really toss out those improvements to get into a ground war with the Russians? These are the same nations which had to be browbeaten to come current on their NATO financial obligations just a few years back.
Wow!! I knew that Ukraine was the breadbasket for the old USSR, but not all of the other high rankings. Occupation would clearly help "Dear Leader" Putin. Last evening I saw an article that he may try using support for the separatist eastern areas as an excuse for an attack. Will NATO or the US help, look at Obummer's record.

This has NOTHING to do with Ukraine. Putin is doing exactly what Kennedy did in 1963, insuring his home-land security. Most people thought Cuba was the issue in '63 when it was actually US missiles in Turkey that Kruschev was after. Putin does not want NATO in his back yard. Biden seems to think Putin fears him, another illusion of grandeur. Putin has accurately summed up Biden and fears him NOT! Biden's ass-kissing approach to anything makes him our biggest liability. Biden's inability to face reality is going to be his biggest down-fall, and it will happen soon. The Chinese are watching, and smiling. Bye bye Taiwan.

I like the Ukrainians but it is still Europe's problem. Not the US's responsibility to solve.

Ukraine has long been the breadbasket of Europe, going back to ancient Greece.
Russia has always coveted ownership of Ukraine. For grain and for a warm water seaport.
After several failed attempts, Catherine the Great was the first Russian ruler to successfully invade Ukraine (Crimea), in 1783.
Russia has considered Ukraine to be its rightful territory ever since.
Putin is merely taking back Russia's property.

There is a lot of history there that we are oblivious to just like we were in Vietnam and Iraq.

You mean like the history of ignorance and failure shown by Biden in his 40 years of foreign affairs decisions?
