what you are doing is called HIJACKING and is considered rude uncivilized behavior. go to the top of screen click on create new topic select main photography discussion, and post your question. In the mean time most questions on how to work your camera usually can be answered if you READ YOUR MANUAL. ( that piece of advice good for any electronic item, including cell phones, computers, cameras, and stereo equipment.)

You are a funny guy, Sinatraman. I enjoy your irreverent, rude and uncivilized posts.
I am a huge believer in the operator making the best of what he/she has access to. I started with Nikon and reluctantly switched to Canon only because I was forced to shoot video. It's a matter of great personal opinion to many people. While I use my RED, or my 5dmkii daily. I was lent a Nikon D7000 and it was like meeting an old friend. Great photos, great video.
I still use old Nikkor glass on my Canon bodies. Figure out which system feels right go for it, and spend your money on a nice piece of glass. Both cameras are a guaranteed good time! And adaptor rings are available for the other brands like Zeiss glass. Have fun, shoot everyday, and buy into the image not the brand! Good luck!
I am a Canon person and my brother Nikon. We argue this all the time and he has decided that I am Canon because I shoot in crappy light and the lenses for that are less expensive for Canon. I would not say I totally agree with him but made me think. I would suggest looking at the subject he intends to shoot and check out the stats of cameras and lenses on both sides so he knows which best suits his criteria. Know the camera and lens he wants now and the lens he wants to get later so that the decision is because he is well informed.
Have him go Canon, then he can borrow your lenses.....
I gave my Nikon 40D to my daughter - She needed a good camera - Gave a Nikon 3000 to a friend for Christmas . I have the Nikon 5000 and and carry it almost every where I go. I love the size a feel of it . It's very comfortable . I also have the Canon 40D but it is kind of heavy and bulky . Keeps me busy learning it. Canon has feature's that the Nikon doesn't have.
But, I love both and will hang on to them for a while. In the mean time Nikon will continue to go where ever I go ....
Consider the D7000. I've had many Nikons D70, N6006,etc. and because my lenses and telescopes connect to Nikons i'm stuck but satisfied. Now, the quality of a photo is determined by the photographer, the lens and the camera in that order.

My son-in-law is in a quandary: Nikon D5000 or Canon T3i. I'm a Canon devotee and want to give him objective advice. Help will be appreciated. Thanks
Tell your son-in-law to flip a coin. Either way, he is going to max out his credit card or empty his checking account.
There are several good nuggets of advice that have been posted so far. I agree to try to not get caught up in the brand loyalty views over what you really need.
One thing to consider is that several years down the road you may want to upgrade your camera body. Once you are invested in a lens system you are somewhat locked into a Nikon, Canon, or whatever your initial brand choice was. Both Nikon and Canon make great glass, but consider what lens you may prefer as you consider your choice.
Just my 2 cents.
Both cameras are great... Find out what your friends use.. this way you can learn from them & swap lenses at times
