My son-in-law is in a quandary: Nikon D5000 or Canon T3i. I'm a Canon devotee and want to give him objective advice. Help will be appreciated. Thanks

There is no right or wrong answer to this, he needs to hold both in his hand and find out which one feels the most comfortable. That's the one for him.
Olympus, Pentax, or Sony
They have better kit lenses than Canikon.
Just my two cents,
Eric
ps Ford or Chevy, PC vs Mac, UV filter as lens protector? I am NOT a troll ;-).
I also have a nikon D5000 & I need help trying to figure out all about how it works, Help

Start your own thread titled 'Have D5000, need help" and you will get a lot more responses than posting your request on this thread.

As always, this question of Nikon or Canon is interesting because everyone has their opinion of what's best. I would say that it really depends on what he wants to do with the camera. I actually own the Nikon D5000 and it takes some great photos. At the same time, I shoot my professional photos with Canon. Both cameras are great cameras and they would both deliver great photos if the person behind them knows how to use the camera. So, that being said, if you are just shooting as a hobby, then it does not matter as much of which camera you select. Grab the one that feels the best and buy some great lenses to go along with them and you can make photography magic.
I have the Nikon D5000 and what questions do you have that you need answered?
How do you change the sound level on the camera, D5000

I stand corrected. This forum never ceases to amaze.

By my chosen UHH name, you can see that I am a Nikonian. It is my experience that a camera body is one of the least expenses, compared to the cost of high quality lenses.
My question is: To what lenses does he currently have access? If Canon lenses, then I recommend a Canon DSLR. If NO lenses, then
he needs to visit a camera store and play with both cameras and their respective "kit" lenses.
As a back-up to my Nikon D90, and for general photography, I own a D5000 with 18-55 & 55-200 kit lenses. Both zoom lenses have surprisingly good optics, and are light weight.
I never try to convert a photographer. It is like Coke or Pepsi, PC or Mac. Once the bond is made, very few convert.

what you are doing is called HIJACKING and is considered rude uncivilized behavior. go to the top of screen click on create new topic selcet main photography discussion, and post your question. In the mean time most questions on how to work your camera usually can be ansswered if you READ YOUR MANUAL. ( that piece of advice good for any electronic item, including cell phones, computers, cameras, and stereo equipment.)

It seems to me that the Nikon D5100 is more of a comparable model to the Canon T3i than the D5000. Is there a reason he is looking at a 2009 Nikon vs. a 2011 Canon? The D5100 is an upgrade of the D5000 that came out this year. Back when I got my first digital Nikon it was because I had a case full of Nikon glass. If he is just starting out that makes no difference though. Like everyone else said he should go check them out and see what he likes best. I do know a pro that switched from Canon to Nikon this year but his reasons would not be relevant to a beginner.
You may have to flip a coin.

Good point! New D5100 are now available in stores for hands-on comparison. Unsold (new) D5000s may be available online for possible discounted prices.
Thanks very much. I did not know the D5000 was an older model.
Thanks to all of you for very good and informative information. I've forwarded it all to my son-in-law. He's clearly in a good position to decide...I know I would.
