NikonRumors is reporting today that the official Nikon Japan website is showing the D500 as discontinued (old product).

NikonUSA still shows it, but when you click on "buy" it is shown as backordered.

Amazon still shows some, but they are refurbished or gray market.

In the previous thread about this someone posted that B&H was still showing it, that was a gray market (imported) camera.

This would knock DSLRs from Nikon down to 4 current models...the D6, D850, D780 and D7500.

When the new models ended, DSLRs passed into legend. And mirrors became myth. And by 2023 only those with the longest beards could remember a time when photography was limited by mirrors.

The writing is on the wall. If one of these remaining DSLRS meets a need, grab it now. Compatibility with older lenses compared with the Z cameras comes to mind. From my observation, Nikon is having trouble keeping the D850 in stock, but I believe it is still in production. For how long? Who knows? Their Z cameras are starting to leave these DSLRs behind, and the gap will widen.

Should make the value of my D500 go up on the used market during this wave of mirrorless transition. Supply and demand. All which helps me not get divorced when I pull the trigger on a Z9!

When sales drop, companies drop the line, too expensive to keep a line running when that same line could produce something to sells much better.
I applaud Nikon for it's decision.
If you miss the D500, buy one new are better yet get one used, there are hundreds of them available and will be for at least 10 years.
The new mirrorless Nikon's are just that much better.
I have always been able to charge for the better, animals that cannot adapt die out you know.
Learn and grow is my motto.
Long live the new lines for Nikon, Sony, and yes, even you Canon.

Everyone seems to forget that DX format is available in mirrorless, as are some new DX lenses. Time marches on. Best of luck to all.

I think that's the point. Nikon and others are moving to 100% mirrorless and producing cameras that rival their best DSLRs, FX and DX. They will soon better their DSLRs across the board, not just in a flagship camera like the Z9. It doesn't make any sense to support two lines of products for very long. The rest of their DSLRs will go away as well.

I would expect Nikon to continue making DSLRs longer than Canon because of the legacy of the F-mount lenses, which have been in production for more than 60 years. There will still be pros that will prefer DSLRs. Nikon continued to make the F6 film camera more than ten years after digital pretty much took over. So Nikon will probably continue to make models like the D850 and D780 indefinitely but consumer level models are already falling by the wayside. Pentax, of course, will continue to make DSLRs but their market share is so small anyway. I shoot Olympus, which along with Panasonic, was the first mirrorless system (although not "full frame"). So I feel I am above the fray.

For as long as they can sell them and make a profit. I think the time frame is going to be less than many people seem to think.

That is true, BUT, you can, in many cases with the D500, put more effective megapixels on the subject, using the same lens, than by switching from FX to DX on a FX camera, using the same lens.
If your confused by the above best leave it alone.

Since I'm not a professional photographer that depends on his gear capabilities for his livelihood, I don't care one way or another. I'm still shooting with my film SLRs cameras (some from the 1980s), and I bought my first digital SLR camera in 2017 and to be honest, it doesn't matter to me which camera I use. They all would do what I want to do; whether I can see or not the results right away. I just pick whichever I fancy at the moment. Camera manufacturers love the masses because they know they can count on them to buy the latest and greatest.

When I said it doesn't make sense for Nikon to support two lines of products, I wasn't talking about FX and DX. I was talking about DSLR and mirrorless. I understand what you're saying, but I wasn't talking about that.

Does this suggest repairs on a D500 will be difficult to get?
