Agree. I really like and enjoy my D500. It has more features and capabilities than I am able to use so why in the world would I want something more advanced? I have no need for mirrorless and do not plan to ever change. I will be long gone by the time my D500 gives up the ghost so I'm not worried about it. If the D500 does crater and repairs are not available, my photography days will be done except for what I can do with the iPhone and the point-and-shoot. Period.

Very well said. I dearly love my Hedgehog family but I also know that you have to use common logic and a bit if common sense and not fall for the "justification" in getting rid of thousands of dollars in DSLR equipment for the latest and greatest that won't produce a product that's any better.

Right arm, man! I use them both as well; and in many cases prefer the film SLR (F4) as the look of film is pretty hard to duplicate digitally without long, long hours in post with expensive software. If I am going to do all that, I will move to LA and get work in a studio.

Fortunately for me, I am just an old guy who likes to take photographs.

I love......"I'm just an old guy who loves to take pictures". Me to buddy, me to.

If you can't tell the difference between an image from a DSLR and a MILC, that just means you still think a mirror is important to a camera.

Not really, I just don't see the need to replace perfectly good equipment until it's absolutely necessary. I think mirrorless technology is wonderful.

They've sold 326 at that price and they are all gray market with a 3rd party warranty.

They accept returns, but with a 10% restocking fee.

So by discontinue the D500 Nikon made it's more valuable.

I don't think it will last. If the camera were still selling like hotcakes, Nikon would not discontinue it. They don't care what they're making money on so long as they're making money. The guy selling these gray market cameras is taking advantage of a few people who are in a panic who now want to buy a new one. I don't think that a gray market version of that camera without Nikon USA's support or willingness to work on the camera if something is wrong is worth that much. There are other camera options.

As I say the window to make money is narrow.

You can go to mirrorless and still not get rid of your DSLR camera and lens equipment.

I have a Canon 7D Mark II and a dozen lenses to go with it. With lenses mounted it is big and it is heavy but I still use it quite a bit. However, for street photography, for indoor work in museums and other low-light venues and as a more casual walk around camera, I often use my newly acquired Nikon Z fc mirrorless camera with either the Nikkor Z 28 mm f/2.8 SE, or the Nikkor 40 mm f/2 prime lenses. It makes for a small and very light kit. Total weight of the camera and either of those two lenses is around 20 oz.

Most of my Canon lenses alone weigh at least as much is my Nikon mirrorless with lens attached. Many of them weigh much more. My Canon kit is big and bulky to drag around all the time especially at the age of 75. I still find myself using it often, but now that I have my Nikon I have more flexible options. Just as importantly, my Z fc is very enjoyable to use and the shots I capture with it are excellent.

Not bitter. And I make no claim to be a great photographer. I do not post what I consider to be my best photographs online anywhere. But I do see what I consider a lot of wasted energy here and find it pretty frustrating. As a result, most of my discussion is with my little group of four artists and teachers at school. They are a lot more fun and more helpful than most folks here and just nicer to be with.

I am gradually giving up on trying to help. Heads here are just too hard, and folks are just too set in their version of the lore.

Amen. I switched from serious to about 90% entertainment mode long ago. That seems a good fit for the nature of this “place”, as to its content and population.

Acoarst this particular thread, being an RIP for SLRs, was destined to be mainly entertainment right from the get go, and it will get weirder page after page. Thaz what happens whenever an open forum collides with “religion”. The D500 has a fervent cultish following.

I'm probably part of that. I love my D500. Never use it for sports or wildlife, either. I bought a second one in 2019 because it is a great general-purpose camera largely misunderstood by the masses. So, if it is discontinued, I should still be in good shape for quite a while.
