Canon Powershot SX50 HS vs Nikon Coolpix P510
A few weeks ago as some of you may recall, I posted questions about buying a SLR for the first time. Being able to just use one hand, I've decided against one for many reasons. After learning that the lens on a high end point and shoot camera is better quality than a standard SLR one I am thinking about the Canon Powershot SX50 that offers an 50X optical zoom and remote for the release button. Being a Nikon guy, I am undecided; I currently use Nikon Coolpix P500 which has 12mp and a 35X zoom. Although a Nikon guy, a 50x zoom and remote would be hard to turn down.
One concern I have is the number of Megapixels each camera offers. The smallest photo that I print is 8 X 10. However the most frequently size that I do is 12 X 16. While the Canon has the 50x zoom, it only has 12.1 Megapixels, whereas the Nikon Coolpix P510 (upgraded version to the 500) has 42x Zoom, but 16 Megapixels.
Would my photos be crisper with 16mp, or should I go for Canon?
I have a 5-year old 8 megapixel Canon Rebel SLR. I have printed 3 posters (20x30) that I was very happy with. At that size they are not necessarily "crisp," but certainly don't look grainy. I think if your lens is good quality and your focus is sharp, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between 12 mp and 16.
Considering the two cameras have almost exactly the same size sensor, the larger MP size should give you the larger clear enlargements. (This providing all else is equal, lens quality, lighting, etc.)
I use a Canon Rebel XTi w/10mp which is 6 1/2 years old and get photos from it enlarged to 18x24 - no complaints from anyone yet and I think they look excellent myself - even under a microscope. As Linda from Maine said - good glass and sharp focus. The key main ingredients.
I have the sx 50 an have Costco do 20x30 all the time with no problum Had the sx 40 with the same results
I would much rather have a lower MP count and a really good lens than a higher MP count and a poor lens. Anyway, uncropped, the difference between and 12MP image and a 16MP image printed at 12x16 would not be visible even under very close examination. Printers use only the amount of data they need and basically discard the excess. A 16MP image could be cropped quite a bit, however, and still have the same detail remaining as the 12MP at full size, giving you more latitude in this regard. I still would rather have a better lens, better sensor and better processor than more MP.
I bought the P510 and I was most disappointed with it, so much so that I returned it to Amazon, something I've never done before.
In it's place I got the SX40 and to me it's a far better beast in a different league and I'm more than happy with it.
Good Grief! First of all, it's in the COMPOSITION. Second of all for all us folks is taking it to the Drug Store or where ever to get processed. Take more Pics and delete what is not wanted . . . .
Don't discount the, "little" cameras' value, since they all provide great, "pics" of the momement YOU are there!
All CAMERAS are great! Take MORE Pics!
Gary
Been using the Canon early model for Professional photos at Bass Pro Shops. For 4 years, it has performed GREAT!
Good Grief, First of all, I enjoy having my newly purchased Nicon P-510, even though I have not used it much, yet. Heck, I intend to put it into much photo sessions.
In the meantime, I bought a Panasonic SZ7, that has a wide to great telescopic zoom, in a "pockatable or belt-loop" camera! Great camera from wide to over 250 mm coverage!
Been using this Panny rather than my Sony or P-510, and don't regret anything . . . . .
May crap out tommorow, but sure do love this place . . . .Gary
Whilst I have a P510 and love it, I would probably ignore the difference in zoom but opt for the remote feature of the SX50 in your situation. I do find the manual controls on the Nikon very easy to use; thought those of the SX40 less so when looking to purchase.
Numbers not always translate into facts in a linear way. For large prints, I've found that my Panasonic G3 - 16 megapixels sensor larger than SX50's 12 megas give me the same image quality in large prints. No miracle here: G3 is used with 'kit lens', a so-so do fairly good stuff, SX50 has very good quality lenses.
Best regards.
