A few weeks ago as some of you may recall, I posted questions about buying a SLR for the first time. Being able to just use one hand, I've decided against one for many reasons. After learning that the lens on a high end point and shoot camera is better quality than a standard SLR one I am thinking about the Canon Powershot SX50 that offers an 50X optical zoom and remote for the release button. Being a Nikon guy, I am undecided; I currently use Nikon Coolpix P500 which has 12mp and a 35X zoom. Although a Nikon guy, a 50x zoom and remote would be hard to turn down.

One concern I have is the number of Megapixels each camera offers. The smallest photo that I print is 8 X 10. However the most frequently size that I do is 12 X 16. While the Canon has the 50x zoom, it only has 12.1 Megapixels, whereas the Nikon Coolpix P510 (upgraded version to the 500) has 42x Zoom, but 16 Megapixels.

Would my photos be crisper with 16mp, or should I go for Canon?

Hi Webbo from Florida,

I donno whether the greater MP's will do much more good on a 12X16, but I sure do like my Nikon P510! After I got the Nikon, for some reason, I decided to do away with all neck-held cameras (one cannot take neck-held cameras into amusement park rides or go on a hike or kayak easily with one), except for especial photo shoots with my P-510 and opted for a Panasonic DMC-SZ7, 14 MP, with 10X zoom (from about 25mm - 250mm - 35mm camera equivalent). It is so nice and comforting to know that I have now broken all the rules and that I ALWAYS have a nice and capable camera on my belt (in a cell phone case) AT ALL TIMES, when I need one.
As far as enlargements are concerned, I haven't done anything besides 8X10's with my Nikon or my Panny, but I guess all is in the eye of the beholder. Heck, my older Sony (State of the Art) 8.1MP with 15X zoom always gave me great service and enlargements up to 8 X 10. This camera is still great and usable, like new, but like all of you others, I got zoom and MP fever . . . .

Whilst I have a P510 and love it, I would probably ignore the difference in zoom but opt for the remote feature of the SX50 in your situation. I do find the manual controls on the Nikon very easy to use; thought those of the SX40 less so when looking to purchase.

The SX50's controls are much improved over the SX40, plus the Remote Release option would definitely make it my choice, PLUS it has a Hot Shoe which the P510 does not. And the zoom is AWESOME quality.
